Recently, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang gave an exclusive interview to Channel News Asia (CNA) in Singapore. During the nearly one-hour conversation, he addressed sharp topics such as the challenges NVIDIA faces in the Chinese market, the global AI competitive landscape under geopolitical tensions, and the impact of AI on employment. As a core navigator of the global AI wave, Huang's views are not only related to the strategy of a trillion-dollar company but also reflect the future direction of the entire technology industry.
Chinese Market: A Competitor and an Indispensable Ecosystem
U.S. export controls on China are undoubtedly one of the core challenges faced by NVIDIA. Huang admitted during the interview that the export restrictions have indeed created a "vacuum" in the Chinese market, which local companies like Huawei have quickly filled, achieving "record-breaking" growth. He candidly stated that even if NVIDIA's technology is superior, in the absence of supply, "the available technology is the best technology," and this technology is "good enough."
However, Huang clearly stated that NVIDIA "will not exit the Chinese market." He firmly believes that NVIDIA can still create tremendous value for the Chinese market. He likened the AI industry to a "five-layer cake," with the chips NVIDIA competes in being just one layer. When NVIDIA participates and provides services in the Chinese market, it is actually also supporting the expansion of the other four layers (possibly referring to software, algorithms, applications, ecosystems, etc.). He emphasized that the market should be viewed from a more "holistic" perspective and that NVIDIA's involvement is beneficial for the growth of the entire AI industry.
When asked whether China would become NVIDIA's largest competitor, Huang's answer was quite meaningful: "China will become the biggest competitor for everyone." His logic is based on China's vast domestic market and rapidly developing AI industry. This is not a competition between companies, but rather a large economy with a unified big market and firm industrial policies demonstrating its comprehensive competitiveness on the global technology stage.
Taiwan Region: The Center of the AI World and an Indispensable Manufacturing Hub
Speaking of supply chains, Huang turned his attention to the Taiwan region. He revealed that NVIDIA has currently invested "hundreds of billions of dollars" in AI infrastructure, most of which has flowed into Taiwan. He emphasized that such investments made through business are "the best form of investment."
Huang highly praised Taiwan's core position in the era of AI: "AI is at the center of Taiwan." He pointed out that companies on the island (obviously referring mainly to semiconductor giants like TSMC) are at the forefront of AI possibilities and growth. At the same time, he also highlighted the challenges Taiwan faces, such as energy and land pressures. However, he is confident about the future, believing that robotics technology will transform Taiwan's manufacturing capabilities, allowing it to maintain an impressive growth pace. "No region is better prepared for the continued growth of AI than Taiwan," he asserted, and he anticipates that Taiwan will continue to experience accelerated growth for many years to come.
Refuting the "AI Causes Layoffs" Narrative: CEOs' "Lazy" Storytelling
In response to the phenomenon of many companies blaming layoffs on AI investments, Huang offered sharp criticism. He believes that the narrative directly linking AI to unemployment is simply "too lazy" for many CEOs who do this.
"AI has only just arrived. How could it have already caused unemployment?" he retorted, "AI only became productive and pragmatic six months ago; how could they have laid off staff two years ago because of AI? This makes no sense." In his view, this is merely an excuse some CEOs use to make themselves sound "smarter," which he expressed disdain for, stating that such claims "scare people" and are "irresponsible."
Huang called for the industry to tell a "balanced story," acknowledging the potential of technology while also emphasizing safety, security, and the establishment of necessary social, political, and governmental policies to ensure the safe development of AI.
Advice for Concerned Workers: Learn AI, Enhance Yourself
For those worried about their jobs being taken over by AI, Huang's advice is direct and pragmatic: "Learn AI. You won’t lose your job to AI; you’ll lose it to those who understand AI better than you do."
His core point is that AI is more likely to "elevate" your job. If you become an expert in the field of AI, it will enhance the value and meaning of your work. He encourages people to try to engage with AI rather than fear it. Of course, he also emphasized that the industry must thoughtfully build AI in a safe and well-regulated manner, ensuring its proper deployment. Industries applying AI (such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, etc.) already have numerous regulations in place that now need to be reassessed to prepare for the AI era.
- The relationship between AI and employment is complex, and simplistic attributions may obscure other management issues in companies.
- Proactively embracing and learning AI skills is the best strategy for individuals to adapt to change.
- Industry regulation needs to keep pace with the times, preparing for the integrated application of AI.
Huang's remarks provide a relatively optimistic perspective that emphasizes personal agency at the forefront of the industry amid widespread anxiety about AI.
Conclusion: Progressing through Competition and Cooperation
Huang's interview outlines the thoughts and layout of global AI leaders amid fierce geopolitical and technological competition. He is acutely aware of the unstoppable rise of China as a competitor, while insisting on NVIDIA's positioning in creating value in the global ecosystem. His reliance on and confidence in the supply chain in the Taiwan region highlight the reality of the highly interconnected global technology industry. His candid remarks about AI and employment serve as a rational correction to the current agitated public discourse.
In an era where AI reshapes everything, corporate strategies are intimately intertwined with national competition, technological ethics, and the future of humanity. Every choice made by NVIDIA and its leader will leave a profound imprint on this grand picture.
