Roger Ver, who renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2014, faces allegations of tax evasion, charges he calls politically motivated. Now, with his final extradition appeal denied in Spain, he could be forcibly sent to the United States at any time. Ver described his ordeal as a targeted attack against those who challenge centralized financial systems. “This isn’t about taxes,” he said during the interview. “It’s about my political views.”
The influential American conservative commentator and television host Tucker Carlson has openly advocated for Ver, urging Trump to grant him a pardon.
He explained that the government’s case rests on allegations that he undervalued his bitcoin (BTC) holdings when paying the controversial “exit tax” required of citizens renouncing their U.S. citizenship. However, Ver insists that he followed the law, hiring top professionals to ensure compliance.
His arrest in Spain, he recounted, was surreal. “I was in the hotel lobby, checking out, when a man approached me, barely understandable through his thick Spanish accent. Only after several attempts did I realize he was identifying me for arrest,” Ver recalled. He was detained and spent weeks in a Spanish prison before securing bail.
American conservative activist, commentator, author, and founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) has pushed for Trump to pardon Ver.
Beyond the tax allegations, Ver’s case has raised serious concerns about government overreach. He revealed that U.S. authorities raided his attorney’s office without a warrant—an act that he and legal experts argue was a blatant violation of attorney-client privilege. “They just showed up, guns on their hips, and started interrogating them (his lawyers) about my tax returns,” he said. The fact that such actions were taken against him, despite clear legal protections, underscores what Ver calls a “perversion of the law” being used to target dissenters.
Throughout the interview, Nawfal expressed shock at the severity of the charges, noting that they could result in Ver spending the rest of his life in prison. Many, including Nawfal and a large handful of prominent figures in the cryptocurrency and libertarian freedom movement space, have called on President Donald Trump to intervene. As Ver awaits the next move by U.S. law enforcement, he remains defiant, stating that he will continue to fight for justice. This is bigger than most people think, he concluded by stating:
This is about truth and justice and are we gonna allow governments to imprison innocent people and go after political opponents?
