The Big Four accounting firm formerly known as Ernst & Young has redesigned its enterprise-focused Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain, Nightfall, to a zero-knowledge rollup design, stating that this change can provide near-instant transaction finality.

In an announcement on April 2, Ernst & Young stated that the new source code for Nightfall, "Nightfall_4," simplifies the network architecture and makes it more user-friendly compared to the previous version based on optimistic rollups.

The shift from optimistic rollups to zero-knowledge rollups means that Nightfall users do not need to contest potential erroneous transactions on Ethereum and wait for a challenge period, allowing for faster transaction finality.

Zero-knowledge rollups do not require this functionality, meaning that once a transaction is added to a Nightfall block, it immediately becomes a final transaction, Ernst & Young stated.

Paul Brody, Ernst & Young's global blockchain leader, said, "This update to the fourth version is a significant upgrade for Nightfall, providing the same privacy protection and scalability as the third version, but now achieving near-instant finality and a more streamlined architecture."

This is the fourth major update since Ernst & Young launched the enterprise-focused Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain Nightfall in 2019.

Nightfall enables the company's business partners to privately transfer tokens while leveraging Ethereum's security, and it is more cost-effective than the base network. Nightfall also employs a technology that binds verified identities to public keys through digital signatures to reduce counterparty risk.

Nightfall also works in conjunction with another major blockchain solution from Ernst & Young—OpsChain—to provide a supply chain tracking platform for financial, logistics, and manufacturing enterprises.

The code for Nightfall is open-source and can be found on GitHub, but it remains a permissioned chain for Ernst & Young's client base.

Competitors of Ernst & Young's Nightfall include IBM-supported Hyperledger Fabric, R3's Corda, and Quorum built by Consensus.
