A report released by Sherlock Communications shows that the developer community in Latin America is increasingly focused on developing mature blockchain ecosystems such as Ethereum (ETH) and Polygon, rather than creating new underlying blockchain protocols.
The study gathered qualitative opinions from 85 developers in Bolivia, Mexico, Brazil, and Peru, revealing that builders in the region are more concerned with transparency, collaboration, and compliance. Developers prefer intuitive tools, comprehensive documentation, and established track records, making networks like Ethereum (ETH) and Polygon the top choices.
Luiz Eduardo Abreu Hadad, a blockchain consultant and researcher at Sherlock Communications, pointed out to Cointelegraph that Latin American developers stand out due to their "high level of technical maturity" and focus on real-world issues.
Hadad told Cointelegraph, "The developer community in Latin America is growing, and skill levels are continuously improving." However, despite the developers' ability to create new platforms, he believes the "current reality" is that the region will become a hub for development and application within existing ecosystems.
On-chain data analysis in the report also supports this trend. Researchers analyzed 697,000 blockchain transactions from wallets marked as being in the Latin American region and found that from June 2024 to June 2025, Ethereum (ETH) accounted for over 75% of the marked transactions in the region.
During the same period, Polygon's activity share was 11%; this is expected to approach 20% by June 2025. The application of Polygon in the region continues to grow, with network activity expected to nearly double by June 2025, reaching 20%.
Hadad told Cointelegraph that while developers prefer mature ecosystems, there are also local projects in the Latin American region with global potential.
He pointed out that tokenization projects, as well as national blockchain infrastructures like Núclea Chain and RBB in Brazil, indicate the region's capability to create new ecosystems.
Hadad mentioned that when discussing the focus areas of the new generation of developers in Latin America (such as students or hackathon participants) in the coming years, decentralized applications (DApps) and real-world asset (RWA) tokenization are key interests.
He stated that the new generation of developers shows interest in DApps that can reshape social media or the creator economy, while areas like supply chain traceability, DePIN, and RWA also attract them.
Hadad told Cointelegraph, "They are looking for stable ecosystems, intuitive tools, and sustainable economic incentives, focusing on solving practical issues such as trust, transparency, and usability."
