Calls for clearer regulatory oversight of digital assets are drawing increased attention from U.S. market regulators. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced on Sept. 24 the agenda and panelists for their Sept. 29 roundtable on regulatory harmonization, which will be held at SEC headquarters in Washington, D.C. The afternoon event, open to the public and webcast, will focus on coordination between the agencies as they address evolving market structures.

A significant portion of the panel lineup comes from the crypto and digital asset industry, including executives from Kraken, Crypto.com, Polymarket, and Kalshi. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, who will open the event alongside acting CFTC Chairman Caroline Pham and SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw, has emphasized that expanding regulatory clarity for crypto markets is one of his priorities. Pham has also underscored the importance of providing clearer rules for digital assets as part of the CFTC’s agenda.

Other panelists include representatives from established exchanges and financial firms such as Nasdaq, CME Group, Intercontinental Exchange, Citadel, Bank of America, and J.P. Morgan.

Three themed discussions will guide the program. The first panel will examine the history of SEC and CFTC relations, the second will focus on platforms and how harmonized oversight could unlock economic value while protecting investors, and the third will address how coordination might reduce costs and expand choice for market participants. Analysts note that while differences in regulatory scope remain, the presence of leading crypto firms alongside traditional institutions signals a growing recognition that digital assets are becoming central to U.S. financial markets. Supporters of harmonization argue that unified oversight could help both protect investors and foster innovation.
