A U.S. Congressman is seeking to ban President Donald Trump, his family, and members of Congress from trading cryptocurrencies or stocks.

U.S. Representative Ro Khanna, a Democrat representing California's 17th district and vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, expressed concerns on an MSNBC program about Trump's apparent conflict of interest with cryptocurrencies through his son's crypto project, World Liberty Financial (WLFI), and accused the recent pardon of Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) of being "blatant corruption."

"You see a foreign billionaire basically involved in money laundering activities," Khanna said while discussing CZ, adding, "and then after basically funneling money to terrorists, he applies for a pardon from Donald Trump."

However, CZ recently pushed back against similar accusations from Senator Elizabeth Warren, claiming she "can't get the facts straight."

CZ pleaded guilty to a single felony charge of violating the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act for failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering (AML) program at Binance.

Khanna accused the Binance co-founder of being let off due to Binance's financial support for WLFI—echoing recent comments from U.S. Representative Maxine Waters.

Trump has faced criticism multiple times for his ties to WLFI; however, his son Eric Trump has consistently denied any connection between his father and the project. In a September interview, Eric emphasized that his father "is running the country. He is not involved in our business in any way, shape, or form."

Khanna did not elaborate on his legislative proposal, but his wording was clear, ultimately calling for a ban on "any elected officials holding cryptocurrencies and accepting foreign funds."

According to government records, Khanna's latest bill has not yet been formally introduced.

The question of whether government officials should be allowed to invest in areas like the stock market has long been a contentious issue.

This debate is currently ongoing in the U.S. with bipartisan congressional stock trading legislation expected to be voted on soon.

To provide context on how complex this issue is, while Khanna pointed out Trump's relationship with cryptocurrencies, he himself has some vested interests in the stock market, highlighting potential hypocrisy.

According to Quiver Quant data, Khanna himself has reached $80.3 million in stock trading volume in 2025.

Since becoming a California Congressman in 2017, Khanna has conducted over 35,000 trades, with a total trading volume exceeding $580 million, and his top three traded sectors are finance, information technology, and healthcare.
