The U.S. State Department announced that, starting January 21, 2026, it will suspend the processing of immigrant visas for applicants from 75 countries.

This measure aims to reassess screening and review procedures to prevent the entry of applicants who may become a "public charge," meaning those who may rely on government assistance for their livelihood.

The suspension is indefinite, and consular officers have been instructed to deny visas based on factors such as the applicant's health, age, financial resources, English proficiency, and history of using public benefits.

This stems from recent concerns about fraud, including a childcare scam involving Somali nationals in Minnesota, and aligns with the broader immigration enforcement priorities of the Trump administration.

Exceptions to the suspension are limited and can only be approved after a public charge assessment, such as certain humanitarian cases, or if the applicant can demonstrate self-sufficiency. This policy is separate from but complementary to other recent actions.
