There’s a prevailing belief in some quarters that because Jamaica has vast amounts of land, especially in parishes like Westmoreland, we should simply allocate land and build houses anywhere. But not all land is suitable or feasible for development. Proper housing development requires more than land. It demands infrastructure such as, roads, water supply, sewage systems, electricity, solid waste management, public transportation, healthcare, and security. Without these, we compromise quality of life and create long-term problems for communities. We will not return to the days of the Operation Pride model, where persons were allowed to settle informally and titles were promised after the fact. That approach, incremental development, has left the Government today with a significant burden to rectify communities lacking basic infrastructure. This administration does not support or encourage informal settlements. I challenge anyone to name a single community that began informally under this Government in the last nine years. We do not believe in chaka-chaka development. We are committed to orderly, structured, and sustainable community building that serves both present and future generations.(Andrew Holness)
