According to a report by Golden Finance, in the face of the threat of withdrawal from the largest donor country, the United Nations Secretary General Guterres is implementing a comprehensive reform plan involving $700 million in spending cuts. The plan calls for a 20% reduction in expenditures and staffing, which will bring the United Nations' annual budget of $3.7 billion to its lowest level since 2018, with an estimated 3000 positions to be eliminated. Although the authorities have linked this reform plan to the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the reduction in scale directly reflects the threat of interrupted US funding - traditionally the US bears 22% of the UN budget. Trump has suspended payment of membership fees and withdrawn from multiple UN agencies, and it is expected that a broader review will lead to further funding cuts.
