[UK Shelves Zero-Tariff Quota Plan for Steel Exports to the US, Shifts to Negotiating "Permanent 25% Tariff"]
According to a report by Financial Times, as cited by Jinse Finance, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has shelved the idea of allowing "UK steel exports to the US to enjoy a certain zero-tariff quota" and is instead leaning toward negotiating with Trump to secure a "permanent" 25% tariff arrangement for all UK steel export products. Allies of Starmer revealed that if UK steel exports could obtain a commitment to a fixed 25% tariff, it would provide "certainty" for the industry and give it a competitive edge—since this rate is only half of the 50% tariff paid by other countries. UK government officials stated that no "formal agreement" has yet been reached to establish the preferential 25% tariff for UK steel as a "permanent arrangement," but it is expected to be announced during Trump's three-day state visit to the UK, which begins on Tuesday.
