Minister Samuda, has confirmed that the National Water Commission (NWC) has fully activated its emergency protocols and staff are working 24 hours a day to ensure Jamaica’s water systems are ready for the potential impact of Tropical Storm Melissa. The Minister advised that the NWC has already deployed over 50 generators to restore water supply quickly after the storm and has also rented four mobile generators to serve communities that may be temporarily affected. The goal is to ensure that within 72 hours, up to 80% of NWC customers regain access to potable water. The NWC is also coordinating with the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) to prioritise critical pumps that serve hospitals, infirmaries, and correctional facilities, and has partnered with parish councils and ODPEM to strengthen water trucking operations once the all-clear is given. Citizens are reminded to store adequate water, and to listen for official advisories from the Ministry of Health and the NWC regarding water quality. After a storm, water should be boiled before consumption until it is declared safe. Minister Samuda assured the public that all systems are in place to restore service swiftly and maintain safe, reliable water supply across the island.
