On February 26th, according to foreign media reports, Trump's new tariff plan will subject approximately 4.2 billion euros of EU exports to tariffs higher than the 15% cap agreed upon in the EU-US trade agreement. According to sources familiar with the EU's tax rate assessment, Trump's new policy will raise tariffs on European export goods, including cheese, butter, some agricultural products, as well as several plastic products, textiles, and chemicals, above the maximum allowed level. The tax rate for some alcoholic beverages and other products will be lower than 15%. When asked about the latest tariffs on Trump, European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill reiterated that "EU products must continue to enjoy the most competitive treatment and tariffs cannot be increased beyond the previously agreed clear and comprehensive limits." He added that under the new tariff system, about 7% of EU exports will exceed the maximum limit of 15%. EU trade affairs chief Shevchovic has had multiple conversations with US Trade Representative Greer and Commerce Secretary Lutnik to discuss the impact of the Supreme Court ruling. Greer said that the United States still needs some time to comply with the agreement. We may need two to three months to ensure that we readjust tariffs in a way that meets the commitments of the agreement, "Greer said on Wednesday.
