The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will launch the "Government Blockchain Academy" to popularize knowledge of blockchain, cryptocurrency, and other emerging technologies in the public sector.
According to the agency's announcement on Monday, it will collaborate with the nonprofit organization Exponential Science Foundation, which advocates for blockchain and artificial intelligence, to jointly launch the academy next year.
UNDP stated, "The academy will provide specialized education and implementation programs that leverage blockchain, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies to help governments achieve transformative development."
Additionally, the agency is committed to assisting countries in achieving long-term economic growth to address poverty issues. According to Chainalysis data, developing countries such as India, Pakistan, and Vietnam are major adopters of cryptocurrency technology this year.
UNDP pointed out that the academy will focus on educating relevant technologies, with the ultimate goal of promoting the application of blockchain technology to address urgent development challenges.
Irena Cerovic, head of the UNDP Europe and Central Asia team, stated that the academy will enable countries to "address complex development challenges in new ways, moving from pilot projects to implementation, further enhancing transparency, inclusiveness, and resilience."
Areas of focus include using technology to create trustworthy and verifiable digital credentials to improve service accessibility, as well as enhancing the accessibility of financial services and digital payments.
The academy will also introduce how blockchain can be applied to track and account for public procurement processes, combat corruption through immutable record-keeping, and explore the use of tokens and smart contracts in climate finance, such as tracking and managing carbon credits.
According to UNDP, while no specific timeline has been announced, the academy will launch in some countries in 2026, with course development starting this year.
The project will also conduct teaching through various formats, including offline, online, and forums, providing systematic support to governments. It aims to promote high-impact blockchain projects that serve national priorities.
The launch of the Government Blockchain Academy is another initiative following the similar "Blockchain Academy" that went live last year.
According to news at the end of 2023, UNDP collaborated with the Algorand Foundation to provide blockchain training to its 22,000 employees, enabling them to apply the knowledge gained to assist countries in achieving sustainable growth.
