Barbecue Stalls and Industrial Parks: Examining the Role Dilemma of Public Chain Foundations from Internal Disputes within Sui

On October 21, the cannabis cultivation simulator Addicted posted a long tweet expressing frustration over the unfair treatment in the Ethereum and Base ecosystems. It stated that there is a "top-down" culture in the Ethereum ecosystem, where if you are not part of the core circle or do not develop products recognized by the core circle, you will not receive any support. Addicted believes there is a serious disconnect between developers and users in the Ethereum ecosystem, as most developers do not endorse speculation and are focused on developing products they believe are good, rather than allowing users and the community to spontaneously form trends.

After switching to Solana, Addicted achieved a maximum revenue of $3.5 million within 48 hours, and the Solana Foundation actively provided support to help the team promote their product. They do not judge the quality of applications but instead allow developers to experiment freely. This open atmosphere surprised the Addicted team and yielded significant benefits.

In response, a member of the Move ecosystem Web3 solution provider IPX Labs, who is also a developer of the Sui ecosystem meme/launchpad project, with the X handle @josemvcerqueira, expressed agreement and subtly indicated that Sui also has similar issues to the Ethereum ecosystem, where projects are judged based on personal preferences.

Perhaps having experienced some setbacks in the Sui community, the founder of Nexa, a former member of Martian Wallet and Polynomial, with the X handle @defiordefuck, also took the opportunity to vent. He mentioned that he had heard or seen similar comments in the Sui ecosystem like "Sui is not for that" or "if you want this, go to Solana and BSC," and believed that such remarks driving away developers and users would only stifle the motivation of builders.

These complaints quickly attracted a backlash from some die-hard fans. A user with the X handle @0xairtx expressed dissatisfaction in a rather extreme manner, stating that the two who complained should feel embarrassed about their remarks because they only want to issue tokens rather than develop products, and that the Sui stack is designed to facilitate product development. This individual believes that Sui is not a degen chain but a "chain used to reconstruct the internet," and therefore should not support these "meaningless" applications.

Perhaps there is indeed a preference for certain types of applications. Rohan Handa, a member of the Deals Team at Mysten Labs (the Sui development company), responded to this die-hard fan's comment by saying, "They are actually very smart; they know everything," implying that those who complain about the Sui community atmosphere are aware of why they are not well-received.

At this point, another Sui community member sarcastically remarked, "If they know everything, why not use Sui to develop the next Telegram or GMail that no one will use, instead of developing a user-oriented DApp?" This directly pointed out Sui's ignorance about where the real users of public chains come from, arrogantly believing that such "politically correct" applications would genuinely attract users. This statement prompted Rohan Handa's classic reply:

I don't know when was the last time Netflix accused AWS of not helping them grow.

This arrogant attitude sparked dissatisfaction among many community members, and the tweet quickly garnered over 20,000 views, with a flood of negative comments below. It seems that many believe Sui comparing itself to AWS is an overestimation, and being in the niche Web3 industry, public chain foundations should provide support to ecological projects to mutually achieve success. A user with the X handle @0xiiptolemy bluntly stated, "Sui paid Binance 9% of the total WAL to get the token listed on the exchange; if Sui can do anything, why spend millions to get Binance's help?" allfather.sui also mimicked Rohan Handa's tone, stating, "AWS employees wouldn't ask Netflix users to go use a Google Cloud-based product if they want to use Netflix. You can't say you want to build the next internet while being picky about the needs of the next internet."

After realizing that team members had said some inappropriate things, Sui co-founder and CEO Evan Cheng stepped forward to apologize to all those who felt belittled and stated that regardless of the differences, negative communication between any members of Mysten Labs, Sui, and Walrus with the community is not allowed. Subsequently, Evan Cheng indicated that he would provide specific plans to address the issues for the builders of Sui and Walrus.

Evan Cheng's quick public relations response received considerable support in the comments section. Some community members noted that there is still a significant gap between the foundation, builders, ambassadors, and the community, but if the gap can be eliminated and communication becomes smoother, they believe the Sui ecosystem will be more attractive.

Should the Foundation Intervene in Development Direction?

Sui ambassador @MindfrogCrypto publicly stated on X that builders in the Sui ecosystem often complain about low liquidity and few retail users, and that foundation funding tends to favor "serious" projects (such as infrastructure and DeFi), while meme/game projects feel "marginalized." Additionally, there are often "purity debates" in the Sui community, such as whether to welcome BSC-style low-threshold projects.

Discussions like this exist in any public chain ecosystem, where developers or project teams do not want the foundation to show obvious bias and prefer support for various types of project development. From the foundation's perspective, there is also concern that if the trend moves too far towards speculation, it may create negative stereotypes that could impact long-term development. From this angle, Sui's support for so-called "serious" projects is justifiable.

Analogous to the relationship between government and enterprises, the government naturally supports the development of physical and high-tech industries more, as these industries create jobs, bring incremental markets, and promote technological advancement. However, this does not mean suppressing street vendors; rather, it is about allowing various industries to have space for survival and development to promote urban inclusivity. For Sui, the foundation should provide unbiased basic support for the entrepreneurial directions and trends that arise spontaneously within the community, while allocating more resources to projects with higher technical or scale thresholds.

Solana's ability to rise from the lows of 2022 is largely due to the support of its foundation. The Solana Foundation did not favor "serious" projects; even during the meme token craze, it did not solely support memes but also promoted the development of other types of projects. Being unbiased may be the most correct thing the Solana Foundation has done, as the prominent trends in the Ethereum ecosystem during this cycle, such as re-staking, are not friendly to retail investors, which has indeed caused it to lag behind Solana in recent years.

For Sui, it is fine to continue supporting "serious" projects, but after achieving returns in token prices due to the high quality of ecological projects, Sui should not fall into path dependence. Instead, it should diversify the types of ecological projects, enhance ecological inclusivity, and attract more ordinary users and liquidity to address long-standing issues.

The owner of a street vendor stall does not worry about the lack of an industrial park but is concerned about the lack of planned vending locations, just as a comment from a user following Rohan Handa's statement noted: "Being responsible and providing support are two different things; you misunderstood your boss's meaning."
