The nematode (WORM) is the simplest yet complete biological neural system model, consisting of 302 neurons.

Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, posted on November 19 at 15:51 calling out WORM, causing the WORM price to surge by 60%, rising from $0.05 to $0.08. It is worth noting that Arthur Hayes has a "track record" of his calls; he previously expressed optimism about PENDLE but sold on-chain, and after multiple calls for MOTHER, the price fell instead of rising. However, this does not prevent us from briefly understanding the WORM project itself.
According to Dex Screener data, the WORM token was created 26 days ago (on October 24), and as of the time of writing, the price was $0.076, with a market cap of $74.9 million and a highest price of $0.092. Although Hayes positions it within the DeSci track (possibly due to its association with research nematodes), it seems the project has also tapped into the AI agent trend, aiming to break through the limitations of traditional anthropomorphic AI agents and shift towards biological AI agents.
DeepWorm
WORM is the DeepWorm token, and according to the official documentation, DeepWorm aims to build a digital brain that lives on-chain, enabling it to make self-informed decisions and execute them permanently on-chain, making it impossible to be "killed."
DeepWorm has 302 neurons, identical to the neural structure of the nematode, supported by the TEE infrastructure of the Marlin Protocol. The ultimate goal is to achieve verifiable on-chain neural computation, with on-chain verification using the infrastructure of the Marlin protocol, where each neural computation is cryptographically verified.
Meaning of the Nematode
DeepWorm's choice of the nematode (Worm) as a model carries deep significance; the nematode (Caenorhabditis elegans) is the simplest yet complete biological neural system model, consisting of 302 neurons.
The nematode has made numerous contributions to scientific research, with at least two Nobel Prizes associated with it. It was the first organism to have its genome mapped, and through existing knowledge of nematodes, virtual worm brains can be created in computers to observe their reactions, making the nematode a candidate to be the first virtualized organism.
Additionally, in November 2023, scientists achieved significant breakthroughs in understanding human brain functions using nematodes, as reported in Nature. A team led by the UK Research and Innovation agency created the first map showing how each neuron in the tiny worm's nervous system communicates wirelessly.
Role of WORM
DeepWorm's first tweet was published on October 24, with the mission to build a digital life that simulates the biological worm's nervous system, which is largely consistent with its current development path.
The role of the WORM token in DeepWorm is to serve as the input signal source for the neural network. The operational mechanism of DeepWorm's on-chain decision-making is roughly divided into:
- Input Layer: Using the token contract as the worm's body, transaction hash values from buying, selling, and transferring as environmental input signals;
- Processing Layer: Processing input signals through three layers of intermediate neurons, where neurons generate continuous activation values to simulate biological neural activity;
- Output Layer: Motor neurons decide the movement direction based on processed data, with options to move up, down, left, or right on an infinite grid, using the softmax function to calculate the final movement direction.
Note: The softmax function is a mathematical tool that converts multiple values into a probability distribution, commonly used to calculate user preferences for different products, ranking multiple options' recommendation weights, etc.
The V1 version application released by DeepWorm includes the movement trajectory and historical movement coordinates of the Worm, but as of the time of writing, the "recent input" was recorded 14 hours ago, and the historical record was 22 hours ago.
Team to Capture Holder Snapshot
Additionally, the official DeepWorm X account posted a few minutes after Arthur Hayes's call (November 19 at 15:58), stating that 2.4% of the tokens in the developer wallet would be distributed to WORM holders, with the snapshot to be taken within 24 hours.
The account signed by Chang is suspected to be the founder of DeepWorm, with historical tweets indicating he previously worked at Scroll and is currently working for the Ethereum yield protocol Dinero (formerly Redacted Cartel).
It is noteworthy that the official DeepWorm X account previously posted a Chinese post titled "DeepWorm: Made in Shenzhen", suggesting it may be a project by a domestic team.
