With the rapid expansion of the Ethereum Rollup ecosystem, issues such as liquidity fragmentation and inefficient cross-chain interactions have become increasingly prominent. Based Rollup, which aims to return transaction ordering rights to the Ethereum mainnet and address the "island effect" of Rollups, is widely regarded as a new path to transition the Ethereum ecosystem from "fragmented competition" to "collaborative win-win."

In this context, as a pioneer in the Based Rollup field, Puffer has launched Puffer UniFi, which integrates re-staking node services (LRT) and pre-confirmation services (UniFi AVS) to provide developers with a decentralized and highly compatible Based Rollup solution.

As early as November 7, 2024, Puffer UniFi officially launched the UniFi internal testing service for developers, and a public version of the second phase of the UniFi testnet will be released soon. This also marks that the Ethereum ecosystem is gradually moving from fragmentation to interconnectivity, entering a new stage of collaborative development.

Based Rollup: A Technological Leap in Ethereum's Self-Correction

According to L2BEAT data, there are currently over 50 Ethereum Rollup-based L2s, making it one of the most prosperous tracks in Ethereum. However, with the expansion of L2s, the problem of liquidity fragmentation caused by independent sequencers and cross-chain delays has become increasingly severe.

For example, different Rollups cannot achieve seamless interaction of funds and contracts, developers must bet on one or more L2s to acquire customers, and users frequently transfer assets dynamically between multiple L2s. This process not only increases the complexity of user experience and development but also severely limits capital efficiency, significantly constraining the overall development of the Ethereum ecosystem.

Ultimately, the core factor behind this fragmentation among L2s lies in each L2 having its own centralized sequencer. Therefore, Based Rollup, characterized by "L1-Sequenced," has become a new solution:

Returning the power of transaction ordering to the Ethereum mainnet, all Rollup application chains share a decentralized sequencer infrastructure, and all transactions are ordered and packaged through the Ethereum mainnet.

Thus, the core advantage of Based Rollup lies in achieving complete decentralization and inheriting the vitality of the Ethereum mainnet—this means that funds can be directly withdrawn from Rollups, and since all transactions are ordered through the mainnet, smart contracts on different Rollups can interact seamlessly. This fundamentally eliminates the island effect of funds and user groups.

From this perspective, Based Rollup is also an important step in breaking down the high walls of Ethereum L2, and it is expected to restore interoperability and composability between L2s and between L2s and L1s. Users will experience seamless interactions akin to a single chain, developers can build highly interoperable application ecosystems, and the capital efficiency and network effects of Ethereum can be maximized.

As a "provider of decentralized infrastructure for Ethereum," Puffer has also launched its own Based Rollup development stack based on UniFi AVS—on one hand, it aggregates re-staking node resources through Puffer LRT, lowering the threshold for node participation and providing a decentralized sequencer cluster; on the other hand, UniFi AVS can achieve millisecond-level transaction confirmation delays through TEE hardware acceleration.

In particular, Puffer has realized atomic composability with the Ethereum mainnet using its TEE-Multiprover technology—under millisecond-level low latency, all cross L2-L1 operations can be conducted within a single transaction, ensuring either complete success or complete failure.

For example, users can invoke contracts on multiple Rollups within the same transaction to complete complex cross-chain financial operations while avoiding uncertainty in intermediate states. This unlocks use cases such as efficient arbitrage, flash loan refinancing, and instant settlement, bringing direct economic benefits to developers and users.

The Ecological Reconstruction Value of Puffer UniFi

From a product perspective, re-staking is just the starting point for Puffer. Puffer's ultimate mission is to break the fragmentation of the Ethereum ecosystem through the Based Rollup architecture, with Puffer LRT and UniFi AVS providing complete tools and technical support for UniFi—L1 verification/sequencing/re-staking nodes, pre-confirmation mechanisms, etc.

On this basis, Puffer deeply integrates Puffer LRT and UniFi AVS into the Based Rollup development stack, empowering developers to quickly build interoperable and highly decentralized Based Rollup application chains. This not only provides an effective path to solve the existing bottlenecks of Rollup L2s but also opens up new collaboration and growth models for developers and project parties.

First, the application chain architecture based on Puffer UniFi eliminates the reliance on traditional centralized sequencers, significantly reducing the operational burden and technical costs for developers:

  • Simplified on-chain management: Developers can focus more on application development itself without maintaining complex sequencer infrastructure;
  • Lower entry barriers: Startups and small to medium-sized teams can quickly join the ecosystem and build their own application chains, further stimulating the innovative vitality of the Ethereum ecosystem;

Second, Puffer UniFi allows developers to directly capture part of the value generated by transaction fees (Congestion Fees generated from transactions in the above image) after deploying their own application chains, thus building a new incentive mechanism for the ecosystem.

After all, these revenues represent a self-contained area that can be used to subsidize users and liquidity incentives, as well as serve as a source of income for the project itself, further supporting marketing, traffic generation, and product development within the ecosystem. This economic autonomy enables project parties to flexibly balance ecosystem expansion and their own profit goals, forming a virtuous cycle.

In this ecosystem, Rollups are no longer in zero-sum competition but achieve win-win through shared resources. This means that latecomers can leverage existing mature user groups to quickly open up promotional opportunities at low costs. At the same time, this economic autonomy is also expected to inspire project parties/developers to fully leverage their initiative, forming a self-generated ecosystem based on UniFi for building applications, achieving large-scale scenario implementation and adoption breakthroughs.

Conclusion

Based Rollup is a dynamic rebalancing of Ethereum in the triangle of scalability, security, and decentralization.

Therefore, the ultimate goal of Rollup is not an infinitely forked "island universe," but to achieve "unity in diversity" through the Based Rollup architecture, with the Ethereum mainnet as the trust anchor.

As the engineering practice of this vision, Puffer UniFi is providing developers, users, and the entire Ethereum ecosystem with a standardized toolkit that balances efficiency, security, and collaboration. In the future, with the addition of more application chains, a seamlessly interconnected Web3 super-ecosystem with free-flowing value may accelerate its arrival.
