😂 Today I saw the Chinese parent group of Squirrel School getting very heated, and I also want to bring this issue to more diverse public media for discussion.

The incident started when the school posted an article on Xiaohongshu celebrating the Korean New Year, in which the English description for the Korean New Year was "Korean New Year." However, the description for the Chinese New Year was "Lunar New Year."

This Xiaohongshu article sparked a debate in the Chinese parent group of Squirrel School. Some parents believe that this indicates a higher status for Koreans in the school, as they used "Korean New Year" first. These parents protested at the school, arguing that the Chinese New Year should be referred to as "Chinese New Year" and that "Lunar" has a discriminatory connotation.

The school's response is that "Lunar New Year" specifically refers to the Chinese Spring Festival, while the international term for the Korean Spring Festival is indeed "Korean New Year," so there is no issue of student status.

Now the parent group is in chaos, with some parents insisting that "Chinese New Year" should replace "Lunar New Year" to emphasize "China," which they believe would elevate the children's status at school. Meanwhile, other parents think that these parents are making a big deal out of nothing, arguing that this is simply a matter of English culture.

What started as a protest against the school has now turned into a protest between two factions of Chinese parents. I haven't gotten involved; I'm just here to take my child to Squirrel School. However, I think this situation reflects some attitudes of Chinese parents, and I won't comment on who is right or wrong. I'm curious to see what everyone thinks.
