An attacker breached the control panel of an AI cryptocurrency trading robot and transferred 55.5 Ethereum (worth $106,200) from its wallet through two commands, raising concerns about the security of AI agents in the crypto space.

On March 18, X user "rxbt" posted that the robot, named "aixbt," is primarily used for market commentary, and its core system was unaffected; the breach was not achieved through manipulating the AI.

"We have migrated servers, changed keys, suspended control panel access for security upgrades, and reported the hacker's address to the exchange," rxbt added.

According to CoinGecko data, since the hacking incident occurred at 1:58 AM local time on March 18, the price of the aixbt (AIXBT) token, which operates on the Ethereum Layer 2 network Base, has dropped by 15.5% to $0.09.

Initially, observers believed the robot had been manipulated, as the AI agent platform Simulacrum AI had previously posted on the X platform that the robot sent 55.5 Ethereum to the attacker—X user "0xhungusman"—as a "tip." That user’s account has since been banned.

AI-driven robots like aixbt, ai16z, and Truth Terminal, which can comment on the crypto market and execute trades, are still being experimented with and optimized, as traders hope to enhance the efficiency of their trading strategies with AI.

Spencer Farrar, a partner at venture capital firm Theory Ventures focused on AI and crypto, told Cointelegraph in an interview that these AI applications are still in a "bubble" phase, but may achieve more practical application value in the future.

Farrar expects that experiments around crypto AI tokens will continue to advance, as these tokens provide retail investors with speculative opportunities, allowing them to bet on smaller market cap concepts that are difficult to access in traditional stock markets.

"In the open-source world, innovation often starts this way—initially, there are a lot of experiments and explorations, which may then lead to truly disruptive outcomes."

Decentralized AI researcher "S4mmy" stated on the X platform that the ability of AI agents to manage crypto funds still needs rigorous testing to ensure that hackers cannot easily attack AI robots and steal assets.

"I am looking forward to seeing how these solutions evolve in the next 12 months, especially as major DeFi protocols begin to integrate existing AI technologies or develop their own AI systems."

CoinGecko data shows that the market capitalization of tokens related to AI agents is currently $4.2 billion.
