This morning, the social protocol Towns, led by a16z with a total funding amount of up to $35.5 million, announced on X that it will launch the TOWNS token in the second quarter of 2025. The total supply of TOWNS is 10 billion tokens, with an initial airdrop ratio of 10%.

According to on-chain data, as of April 10, Towns has over 400,000 registered users, with 200,000 users holding points, and a total of 328,000 spaces. Additionally, there are fewer than 50,000 users with over 5,000 points, totaling only 48,500. Therefore, currently, Towns is not facing intense competition compared to "top-tier" projects like Monad. Towns: The Blockchain Version of Discord
Towns is a group chat protocol and application designed specifically for online communities, consisting of three parts: smart contracts, a decentralized node network, and applications built on the Towns protocol. The biggest feature of Towns is its adoption of the town square concept, combining community, NFTs, and games, providing users with an Ethereum-based smart contract system and end-to-end encrypted chat. Towns allows community members to own their town square and communicate freely with others through a fully decentralized, end-to-end encrypted chat protocol.
Towns provides users with the foundational building blocks to create their ideal community. The ownership of each Town exists on-chain, allowing it to be transferred, sold, or held by another smart contract (such as a DAO or multi-signature). Towns empowers communities to create programmable, autonomous gathering spaces for communication, build new clients or APIs, and maintain complete control and customization, enabling any group to organize and chat freely using Towns while designing rules that meet their needs. Additionally, community owners can create unique experiences for communities, NFTs, and games, such as selling access keys to specific channels, rewarding members for their contributions, or allowing users to trade NFTs directly in chat, among other things.
The founding team of Towns is Here Not There Labs, co-founded in 2020 by Rubin (former CEO and co-founder of Houseparty and Meerkat) and Brian Meek (former CTO of STRIVR Labs and former engineering general manager of Skype).
According to ROOTDATA data, Towns has completed two rounds of financing, totaling $35.5 million, specifically:
On February 23, 2023, Towns announced the completion of a $25.5 million Series A funding round, led by a16z Crypto, with participation from Benchmark, Framework Ventures, and others;

Currently, although the details of the points accumulation mechanism have not been announced, each newly connected channel will automatically issue an NFT to confirm participation, and if users create their own channels, it will convert into an independent smart contract on the blockchain. STEP 1. Visit the project official website (link: https://app.towns.com/), click "Login" to register an account. Currently, account registration can be done using Google email, X platform account, or Farcaster.
STEP 2. Click the "wallet icon" to recharge your personal wallet, select the Base chain address to recharge ETH (recharge with ETH worth $10 is sufficient).
STEP 3. As shown in the image below, click "+" to create a Town, insert the Town avatar and name, then choose "free" or "paid" Town. For "paid" Town, you can select a fixed fee standard (minimum 0.001 ETH) or a dynamic fee standard. Additionally, only creating or joining "paid" Towns will earn points rewards. STEP 4. As shown in the image below, click the "beaver" icon for daily check-in (a Base chain gas fee is required for interaction confirmation), earning 1 point each time.
STEP 5. Actively participate in discussions and interactions in your Town to increase activity levels, and you can also earn points through tips from others.
