Scammers are once again leveraging the hype around Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok, with counterfeit tokens re-emerging as part of potential phishing attacks.
According to blockchain security firm PeckShield, a wallet associated with former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao received 90 million counterfeit Grok (GROK) tokens on April 21.
PeckShield stated that these tokens are "likely a scam" because "the deployer distributed them to multiple addresses through multiple sends."
The Grok AI chatbot on the X platform currently has no official cryptocurrency and has no plans for issuance in the future.
According to blockchain data visualization platform Bubblemaps, counterfeit Grok-related tokens first appeared in 2023 when a scammer deployed an ERC-20 Grok token on Ethereum. After the deployer sold 0.5% of the total supply, the token's price plummeted by over 90%.
Scammers often exploit the credibility of social media platforms, major brands, or celebrities like Musk to gain the trust of victims.
According to a report from email security provider Mailsuite, Meta is the most impersonated brand in phishing reports for 2024.
In the cryptocurrency industry, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is the brand most commonly impersonated by scammers, but the number of scammers targeting Meta is more than 25 times that of the exchange.
As scammers continue to covet investors' cryptocurrency assets, scams and fake tokens related to Musk are on the rise again.
On April 14, cryptocurrency recovery and security advocate Denis Thomas discovered a fake announcement impersonating an "AI Musk Live" event, claiming to give away $20,000 worth of cryptocurrency.
According to scam detection platform Coinspeedrun, several Musk-related meme coins have appeared on the Binance Smart Chain (BNB Smart Chain) in recent weeks.
Phishing scams (such as address poisoning) involve tricking victims into sending assets to fraudulent wallet addresses.
According to blockchain security firm CertiK, there were 296 phishing scam incidents in 2024, resulting in losses exceeding $1 billion for the cryptocurrency industry, making it a significant threat.
