According to reports, Coinbase was informed in January that its customer data may have been leaked by an employee of an outsourcing company, which was months before the incident was publicly disclosed last month.
According to a report by Reuters on June 3, citing five former TaskUs employees, the data leak partially disclosed by Coinbase in regulatory filings on May 14 was due to an Indian employee of the outsourcing company TaskUs being found using a personal phone to take pictures of work computer screens.
These former employees stated that they were told the employee and a suspected accomplice were allegedly providing Coinbase customer information to hackers in exchange for money. It was reported that Coinbase was notified immediately after the incident occurred.
TaskUs is a U.S. business process outsourcing company operating in India, and according to a lawsuit filed in Manhattan on May 27, the company is accused of handling Coinbase's customer support operations.
More than 200 TaskUs employees were laid off during a mass layoff in January, which sparked protests and garnered widespread attention from Indian media. However, only two specific employees were identified as the main culprits of the leak, which affected nearly 70,000 customers.
Coinbase stated to the media that it has "cut ties with the involved TaskUs personnel and other overseas agents and strengthened control measures."
After hackers leaked user data in mid-May, Coinbase rejected a $20 million ransom demand, prompting the company to decide to disclose the matter.
Coinbase did not immediately respond to requests for comment from reporters.
TaskUs was previously accused of a data leak related to cryptocurrency in 2022, when Shopify and the company were sued for failing to effectively protect customer data after the servers of cryptocurrency wallet manufacturer Ledger were hacked two years ago.
The lawsuit claims that Shopify and TaskUs were aware of the data leak for more than a week before notifying customers.
After the hack and the leak of personal data of hundreds of thousands of hardware wallet users, Ledger customers continue to be ongoing victims of scams and phishing attacks.
