Hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor has warned users that a phishing campaign is currently taking place, impersonating the company's official customer support responses.
In a post on X on Monday, Trezor stated that the company has become aware of "attackers abusing our contact form to send scam emails that appear to be legitimate Trezor support replies." The company reminded customers not to share their wallet backups and emphasized that wallet backups should always remain "private and offline."
Trezor stated that the company "will never ask you for your wallet backup" and confirmed that these emails may seem legitimate, but they are not.
Trezor noted that the issue has now been controlled. The company clarified that there has been no email leak; attackers submitted requests to the company's support system on behalf of affected users, triggering automated replies.
These requests led to the Trezor support system sending out automated replies. The company claims that its "contact form remains secure and reliable."
Trezor did not immediately respond to Cointelegraph's request for comment.
Phishing attacks are very common in the cryptocurrency industry, and spear-phishing attacks targeting high-net-worth individuals often result in significant losses. Mehdi Farooq, an investment partner at the crypto venture capital firm Hypersphere, recently revealed that he lost most of his life savings in a targeted phishing attack.
At the end of May, a victim was scammed twice within three hours, losing a total of $2.6 million in stablecoins. It is also not uncommon for phishing bait to be exposed to a large number of potential victims through hacking methods.
A few days ago, cryptocurrency price tracking service CoinMarketCap removed a malicious pop-up notification from its website that prompted users to verify their cryptocurrency wallets. Similar attacks have also occurred on Cointelegraph but have since been resolved.
Last Saturday, Cointelegraph's banner publishing system was briefly compromised. The breach resulted in a malicious advertisement promoting a fake token airdrop. Unauthorized code has been removed, and additional security measures have been implemented to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
