Conor Grogan, a Coinbase director, has speculated that the $8 billion in Bitcoin ( BTC) that recently “woke up” could have been hacked. To back this claim, Grogan pointed to a single BCH test transaction from one of the BTC whale clusters, which he discovered hours after the movement of the dormant coins was noticed.
In a post on X, Grogan explained that the hacker or hackers may have chosen BCH to “test the waters” because the crypto asset is not heavily tracked by crypto whale watchers.
“There is a possibility that the owner was testing the private key in a way that wouldn’t get noticed, as BCH isn’t monitored heavily by whale watching services. What makes me say this is the other BCH wallets have not been touched at all; why wouldn’t they also sweep these?” Grogan asked.
While admitting that his conclusion lacks a solid foundation, Grogan still highlighted the fact that BTC was moved manually. Additionally, his assertion that no exchange wallet was involved served as evidence that this may have been a heist.
On the social media platform X, some users backed the Coinbase director’s theory that the transfer of BCH was indeed “classic key test check behavior.” However, one user suggested that someone had acquired “one of those old wallet.dat files and finally cracked it after all these years.” Grogan, however, retorted by questioning why the person only touched the $2 million in BCH in one wallet an hour before the BTC moves, and “then not come back and sweep the remaining BCH?” According to the director, “this is really odd.”
Another user, Binji, argued that the time taken to conduct the transactions undermines the claims that this was a hack.
“Given how slowly these sends transpired, it’s hard to be convinced it’s a hack,” the user explained. “I’d imagine they would be a bit faster with moving these funds. That is, of course, if we are assuming this to be just one entity.” Meanwhile, other users speculated that a quantum computer could have broken the key, a feat which they asserted might send quantum stocks soaring.
