Trump claims that Musk's formation of a new political party to confront the Republican Party is "off the rails."

Former U.S. President Trump publicly criticized his former "spending cuts chief" Musk. This came after the global billionaire announced plans to establish a new political party to challenge the existing two-party system in the U.S.

"Seeing Musk completely 'off the rails' over the past five weeks has been like a 'train wreck,' and I find it regrettable," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday. Just hours earlier, Musk announced that he had formed the "American Party."

"He even wants to create a third party, despite there being no successful precedent in U.S. history—this system doesn't seem designed for them," he added.

Musk's new political party could potentially split the Republican vote. He has stated that he will focus on key districts ahead of next year's midterm elections, including efforts to unseat some Republican lawmakers.

However, while third-party candidates occasionally achieve success in state and local elections, no third party has won the presidency since the Republican Party became a major party in 1856.

On Sunday, Musk posted on his X platform that he is forming the "American Party." He had previously promised to create the party if Congress passed the large tax and spending bill proposed by Trump, which was approved on Thursday.

After Musk's post, the Federal Election Commission received multiple registration applications related to the "American Party," DOGE, or X, showing Musk's connection to these entities. Musk confirmed that at least one of the applications was fraudulent, and there were doubts on social media about the authenticity of other registrations.

Musk objected to the spending levels in the Republican-led "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," calling it a "disgusting monstrosity" that is expected to increase the national debt by $3.3 trillion over the next decade.

Before the bill's passage, Musk threatened to ensure that any lawmakers supporting it would lose in next year's primaries, stating, "I will make sure they lose in the primaries, even if it's the last thing I do in my life."

This is the latest development in their public feud since late May. At that time, Musk was about to end his special government employee position in the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), named in homage to the cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE).

Musk claimed that the bill undermined efforts to cut government spending related to DOGE.

Trump's staunchest supporters are generally concerned that Musk's American Party could siphon off Republican votes in next year's midterm elections, threatening the party's already slim majority in Congress.

Third-party candidates rarely pose a substantial threat to the Republican and Democratic parties, but due to Musk's financial strength, if he advances his plans, it could have an impact in next year's elections.

The U.S. operates on a "winner-takes-all" electoral system, meaning that the candidate with the most first-preference votes can win even without a majority.

Some of Trump's most loyal supporters worry that the American Party may attract voters who would otherwise lean Republican, leading to a split in the base and threatening the Republican majority, potentially allowing a Democratic candidate to win.

Far-right commentator Laura Loomer, closely associated with Trump, stated on X that several prominent Republican House members, including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie, may switch to Musk's new party.

On Friday, Musk posted on X that his party plans to focus on securing a few key House and Senate seats, which he believes would be enough to obstruct the agendas of either the Republican or Democratic parties.

"One way to achieve this goal is to focus on 2 to 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts."

He added, "Given the extremely slim legislative margins, this would be enough to become critical votes and play a decisive role in controversial bills, ensuring that these bills truly reflect the will of the people."
