Blockchain and agriculture may seem like a strange combination, but as Yana Leonova explained in Episode 19 of "The Clear Crypto Podcast," this pairing has the potential to address some of humanity's most pressing challenges—from food waste to land disputes.

"Agriculture can be a great example of how blockchain can benefit the planet, sustainability, and each of us," Leonova said, not speaking hypothetically.

Her PhD in agricultural economics and her work within Dubai's innovation ecosystem place her at the intersection of blockchain and real-world impact.

One of the most specific use cases? Supply chain transparency. Projects like IBM Food Trust and WWF's OpenSC are already tracking products like seafood and palm oil on the blockchain.

In the UAE, Leonova pointed to the "farm-to-table" initiative, which has reduced an estimated $6 billion in food waste by increasing visibility and matching supply and demand in real-time. She explained:

"This technology is not just about logistics improvements; it’s also about empowering small farmers. The idea is that we can use tokens and smart contracts… without intermediaries, without bias," Leonova said.

The conversation also delved into the more philosophical aspects of blockchain's role: justice.

Leonova outlined how an immutable ledger can protect land ownership, especially in cases where paper records are lost after disasters.

Co-hosts Nathan Jeffay and Gareth Jenkinson emphasized how these examples break the notion that blockchain is only about speculation. "This is not about distant cryptography or currency trading," Nathan said. "It's about solving real-world problems."

Despite lingering skepticism, Leonova remains optimistic about adoption.
