Ethereum core developer Federico Carrone, known as "Fede's Intern" on X, confirmed that he has been released after being detained for 24 hours in Turkey on suspicion of being associated with an Ethereum privacy protocol.

"I’m finally out, safe and free. There was a brief moment when things looked bad, but thanks to the help of many, I was able to be released," Carrone stated in a post on X on Monday.

According to Carrone, the Turkish Interior Minister accused him of "aiding others in abusing Ethereum," allegedly in connection with a certain privacy protocol. Carrone believes this is related to a research paper from January 2022 that assessed user privacy on Ethereum and Tornado Cash.

"We never assisted anyone in engaging in illegal activities; it was purely academic research focused on mixers and their properties," Carrone said.

This incident has heightened concerns about the arrest and detention of crypto developers in connection with open-source privacy protocols—most notably, Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm, co-founders of Tornado Cash, who are awaiting a final verdict in a high-profile trial in New York.

This outcome could set a precedent that, at least in the U.S., criminalizes open-source privacy tools, posing serious risks to decentralized financial innovation while significantly limiting privacy rights.

Although Carrone is now in Europe, he stated that the initial situation was not optimistic; he was told his phone would be confiscated and that he could not speak to anyone.

Fortunately, Carrone said, friends from the UAE, UK, US, Europe, Argentina, and even some close contacts within the Catholic Church immediately intervened to help, with some reaching out to senior officials in Turkey to ensure his release.

Members of the Solana ecosystem also offered to reach out and expressed their willingness to assist, Carrone added.

However, Carrone noted that the case is still ongoing, and his Turkish lawyer is still defending him.

"We still don’t fully understand what happened or why, but we will assemble the best team to address this issue," Carrone said. "If necessary, once things are resolved, I will return to clear my name and defend myself."

On Tuesday, Carrone stated that he donated $500,000 worth of Ethereum (ETH) to assist Storm's legal defense in response to his situation.
