I have always felt that English is the least scientific language. It is clearly a phonetic script, yet it cannot directly spell out the correct pronunciation of words; conversely, it is also very difficult to accurately spell words based on the sounds heard. Words often contain silent letters, and if they are not pronounced, why are they included? It is clearly a phonetic system, yet an additional set of international phonetic symbols has to be invented. Even more exaggerated is that almost every specific concept requires an independent word to express it, such as pen, brush pen, pencil, fountain pen, marker, quill, laser pointer, ballpoint pen… In the context of Chinese, as long as one is not illiterate, it is easy to understand the meanings of these words, while in English, apart from pencil and fountain pen, there is hardly any connection between the other terms.
