Ripple announced on Sept. 4 that its USD-backed stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD), will be made available in Africa through partnerships with Chipper Cash, VALR, and Yellow Card.

“RLUSD has quickly become established in enterprise financial use cases, from payments to tokenization to collateral in both crypto and traditional trading markets,” Jack McDonald, senior vice president of stablecoins at Ripple, outlined the growing adoption of the token. He further shared:

We’re seeing demand for RLUSD from our customers and other key institutional players globally and are excited to now begin distribution in Africa through our local partners.

McDonald noted that RLUSD has also been integrated into Ripple Payments, widening the scope of stablecoin settlement options within the company’s cross-border payments solution.

Introduced in late 2024, RLUSD has surpassed $700 million in market capitalization, demonstrating strong institutional and retail uptake. Ripple highlighted that the stablecoin was designed with compliance at its core and issued through a New York limited purpose trust company regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS).

Ham Serunjogi, co-founder and CEO of Chipper Cash, stated: “After establishing our partnership with Ripple earlier this year to support faster, cheaper, more efficient cross-border payments into Africa, we were keen to make RLUSD available to our clients as soon as possible.” The executive added:

RLUSD is uniquely positioned to drive institutional use of blockchain technology across Africa and broader global markets, including through cross-border payments.

In addition to financial services, RLUSD is supporting humanitarian pilots in Kenya led by Mercy Corps Ventures. One initiative uses the stablecoin as collateral for drought insurance, releasing funds through smart contracts when satellite data signals worsening conditions. Another program applies RLUSD to rainfall insurance, providing payouts during extreme weather events. With listings already secured on major exchanges such as Kraken, Gemini, and Uphold, the expansion into Africa underlines Ripple’s dual approach of driving institutional blockchain adoption while advancing climate resilience efforts.
