The cryptocurrency sector urgently needs to reshape its value narrative: opinion leaders suggest that the narrative should be based on "protecting children."

Entrepreneur and Web3 investor Carl Runefelt, operating under the name Carl Moon, recently donated over $400,000 in cryptocurrency to Kids Operating Room (KidsOR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing surgical care for children in underdeveloped areas.

According to Cointelegraph, Garreth Wood, co-founder and chairman of KidsOR, stated that Runefelt's donation is a "game-changing step" for them.

"This is not just a generous gift," Wood said, "it shows us that innovative fundraising methods can bring together those who want to help children globally through innovation."

Wood added that they now accept cryptocurrency donations through the JustGiving platform, allowing more people to support their efforts to provide surgical services for children worldwide.

Runefelt believes that the wealth gained through cryptocurrency comes with the responsibility to help others. His donation funded a surgical and recovery room in Tanzania, as well as a children's hospital in Zimbabwe.

Runefelt stated that his charitable mission stems from his brother, who was born with Down syndrome and has undergone over 60 surgeries.

"If my brother hadn't received surgery, he wouldn't be alive today," he said, calling on cryptocurrency users to help children facing similar challenges who cannot access the medical services they need.

"Many children around the world are in urgent need of help. I hope to do my part and inspire more people to get involved," Runefelt added.

According to KidsOR, since 2014, the organization has built over 100 children's operating rooms in 35 countries and has completed more than 726,000 surgeries to date.

Wood stated, "Every operating room we build has a huge impact. With more support, we can expand from helping hundreds of thousands of children to millions."

Although accepting cryptocurrency donations "comes with certain challenges," Runefelt's donation has shown them that it is entirely feasible and worth trying.

According to Cointelegraph, he noted that the transparent nature of cryptocurrency allows donors to see the impact of their generosity directly. Wood mentioned that this transparency can build trust, strengthen accountability, and create a strong connection between donors and the children they help.

Wood also added that the core values of cryptocurrency and Web3 align closely with the concept of global health equity, which asserts that everyone should have access to medical services.

Wood stated, "The decentralized and borderless nature can unlock resources and opportunities for children worldwide, and charity is the bridge to achieving this vision."

Cryptocurrency charity is not a new phenomenon. In 2024 alone, cryptocurrency donations exceeded $1 billion, accompanied by increasingly clear regulations globally, leading to continued prosperity in the cryptocurrency sector.

According to a report by The Giving Block in February, the number of nonprofits accepting cryptocurrency has increased in 2024. The platform noted that over 70% of the top charitable organizations in the U.S. have begun accepting cryptocurrency.
