One of the largest cryptocurrency industry conferences in the world, Token 2049, has just concluded, but an unexpected "emotional turmoil" has stirred up a storm in the community and on Twitter. The incident originated from a "forensic event" that took place at an altitude of ten thousand meters, leading to the breakup of a couple in the crypto circle. As of the time of writing, the related post has surpassed 6.6 million views, almost higher than the view counts of all Token 2049 project news. Undoubtedly, this has become the most dramatic off-site news of this year's Token 2049.
The incident began on October 3, when Twitter user Kate (@katexbt) inadvertently witnessed the phone screen of a passenger sitting next to her on a flight returning from Singapore Token 2049. The passenger, sitting in seat 15 F, named Chris, is a professional in the cryptocurrency industry, and the chat content displayed on his phone caught Kate's attention.
The chat log showed that Chris was having a rather ambiguous conversation with a woman. The girl wrote in the message: "You are so tempting! Wish you a smooth journey, Chris. By the way, sorry for being so direct, but I want to let you know that I am on my period… it's already the last few days… if you don't mind, we can (maybe should?) do some things we've been dreaming about for the past two months."
When Kate discovered Chris, he was typing a reply: “I just want to be close to you more than anything, don’t worry.”
Kate immediately posted about the incident, providing detailed information: "If your name is Fei, and you have a white boyfriend named Chris in the cryptocurrency circle, who flew from Singapore Token 2049 to London Heathrow Airport yesterday, sitting in seat 15 F, then he is definitely cheating. He booked a hotel room, planning to use a business trip to London as an excuse to spend the night with a girl named Cheng he met at the @irysxyz and @multibankio booths."
This post quickly went viral in the crypto community. Data shows that the post garnered 4 million views, 444,000 interactions, over 97,000 detail expansions, and 28,000 profile visits in just two days. Kate herself expressed surprise at the massive traffic: "I was also quite surprised."
There were even some troublemakers who attached a clearer version of the blurred text on the screen for readers to check out.
More dramatically, Chris's girlfriend Fei (@yeunglean) saw this post on the same day. On the same day, she released a breakup statement: "Update: Chris and I just broke up. Interestingly, we met for the first time at Token two years ago; maybe industry conferences are just places for white men to meet Asian girls. gg (game over)."
The post also received over 5.4 million interactions.
The crypto community's reaction to this incident has been mixed, with both sympathy and dark humor:
Firstly, quite a few people criticized Kate for using someone else's private matter to gain traffic. However, many female bloggers felt that Kate was "administering justice," "standing up for the girl who was kept in the dark."
Of course, there were also some hilarious comments.
Irys founder Josh Benaron expressed confusion under Kate's post: "Who is Cheng? I think you got the project wrong." Since Kate's post mentioned that Cheng had worked at the Irys booth, Josh seemed worried that the company would be dragged into this matter. Kate quickly clarified: "Maybe it's someone unrelated to the project, not her fault. Don't worry. Love Irys."
Wizard Of SoHo joked: "This is why you should never sit in economy class ;)" Kate responded: "You're right, boss."
User jazz (@degenjazz) said: "Wow, Cheng is my girlfriend," and no one knew if he was joking;
Joe Wong (@KhunJoe 5) predicted: "This might be Chris's last Token 2049 until 2049." Kate succinctly replied: "Really."
User celestineia gave straightforward advice: "Never date a man you meet at a crypto conference."
Ritesh (@Ritesh_Trades) commented: "A Coldplay moment in the crypto circle."
(Note: At a Coldplay concert held at Gillette Stadium in Boston, the Kiss Cam captured a couple embracing. When they realized they were being shown on the stadium's big screen, the woman immediately covered her face with her hand, while the man completely avoided the camera. Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin jokingly remarked: 'Either they are having an affair, or they are very shy.' The couple was later identified as Andy Byron, CEO of tech company Astronomer, and Kristin Cabot, the company's Chief Human Resources Officer, both of whom are married with children. The video went viral on social media, garnering over 30 million views. Ultimately, Andy Byron resigned as CEO, and the company's board initiated a formal investigation.)
Long-time crypto user Code (@CodeXBT) said: "You are truly an off-chain zachxbt (a detective skilled in tracking hacking incidents)."
In any case, this "blockchain-style forensic event" that began at an altitude of ten thousand meters has left a permanent record on Twitter in the most transparent and immutable way. Regardless of whether this forensic event is procedurally just or how much debate it generates, the course of events cannot be rolled back.
However, next time, we may not be able to see Chris at Token 2049.
