Growing institutional interest in crypto derivatives, particularly XRP, is prompting traditional exchanges to expand their digital asset offerings. CME Group, a leading global derivatives marketplace, announced on Oct. 13 that U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)-regulated options on XRP and solana ( SOL) are now live and available for trading on its platform.
CME Group stated on social media platform X:
CFTC-regulated options on solana and XRP are now live and trading today.
The new products are physically settled into the corresponding futures contracts, offering traders seamless integration and flexibility through both standard and micro contract sizes. The expanded lineup complements CME’s existing crypto suite, which includes monthly and weekly expirations across bitcoin, micro bitcoin, ether, micro ether, solana, micro solana, XRP, and micro XRP—available Monday through Friday for active trading strategies. The development underscores CME Group’s continued effort to meet demand for regulated crypto exposure and diversification beyond bitcoin and ether.
CME explained that traders seeking physical delivery of bitcoin, ether, XRP, or Solana can use an Exchange for Related Positions (EFRP) transaction. This privately negotiated trade between two parties allows the simultaneous exchange of a spot and futures position. Spot holders can use an EFRP to swap a long spot position for futures exposure, which can then be rolled forward. These transactions are regulated under Exchange Rule 538.
While some analysts caution that lower liquidity could limit near-term adoption, advocates believe regulated derivatives on XRP and solana enhance transparency, compliance, and efficiency in the evolving crypto ecosystem.
