A very poor user experience:
I have a Ledger @Ledger hardware wallet that has been unused for about a year, and of course, I haven't taken it out to charge it;
The purpose was mainly for Rstaking interactions last year, and some Ethereum assets are still staked and haven't moved.
Just now, when I was preparing to organize the wallet, I found that my Ledger couldn't be turned on. After half an hour, the device still wouldn't turn on and wouldn't charge!
It directly displayed: Battery problem charging stopped. Clearly, this means the battery is damaged. There was no impact during the storage process, which means the battery failed on its own.
WTF?
After trying for a long time with no effect, I asked customer service, and they bizarrely suggested that I hold the hardware for a few minutes; maybe it would recover!
What the hell? Am I supposed to warm up the hardware wallet? What kind of logic is that!
Although I didn't understand, I still followed their advice because my recovery phrase was far away, so I hoped to be able to turn on the hardware wallet.
But I held it in my arms for five minutes, and it still wouldn't turn on.
Then, like I was treating my own private parts, I used my warm right hand to slide up and down on it. Three minutes passed, and still no results!
At this point, I was out of options. I had to drive a long way to use the recovery phrase to retrieve my assets. Fortunately, my recovery phrase record had no issues; otherwise, it would have been game over!
Let me mention the model I used: Ledger Nano X purchased in 2022.
So here comes my suggestion: As users of hardware wallets, the starting point for storing assets is security, and there’s a high probability that we won’t use it for a long time, so an unavoidable situation is that there will be long periods without charging.
Based on this situation, if you are a hardware wallet manufacturer, I suggest you ensure the battery quality is up to standard, at least to guarantee that it can last a year without charging and still work.
If the battery quality is this poor, then it’s a product that doesn’t care about its core functionality, which can easily cause me trouble and results in a very poor user experience!
@_pgauthier @P3b7_ @iancr, please take this advice and upgrade!
This incident also gave me some insights:
1️⃣ The recovery phrase is the last line of defense;
I deeply realized again: don’t think that having a hardware wallet means everything is fine; you never know when something might go wrong.
So when generating the recovery phrase with a hardware wallet, be extremely cautious, and then protect it well, and protect it again.
2️⃣ I suggest that those who use hardware wallets take them out to check every three months;
Products on the market vary in quality, and we shouldn’t be too confident in our own devices. Once assets are lost, it’s not worth the cost.
Lastly, I want to mention another wallet, Onekey, which also hasn’t been opened for half a year and still has 75% battery left; it opened without any issues (this is not an advertisement; I’m just stating the facts).
