Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, gave his take regarding the current state of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry and how it can work against the implementation of this tech for humanity’s benefit.
Nadella, who also recently referred to the infrastructure problems of the AI industry, called for abandoning the current competition in the sector, allowing companies to build platforms instead of promoting their own solutions.

As an example of this working in today’s “somewhat zero-sum mindset industry,” he put the partnership of his company with OpenAI and Nvidia, allowing all participants to reap the benefits of such a team-up and also extending these benefits to other companies using their infrastructure for training purposes.
Nadella stated:
Let us move beyond zero-sum thinking and the winner-take-all hype and focus instead on building broad capabilities that harness the power of this technology to achieve local success in each firm, which then leads to broad economic growth and societal benefits.
Nadella stressed that when these benefits reach societal benefits, such as helping pharma companies design new therapies in reduced times, or helping teachers develop personalized lessons, “we’ll know the system is working.”
Nadella’s stance brings a different point of view about the current battle for getting the “better” large language model (LLM), stating that this course of action means nothing if it doesn’t help develop other companies’ own products to help society in the end.
This can be seen as a veiled response to those who have criticized the current flurry of deals between these AI companies as circular money movements that only serve to prop the value of these companies higher. Nadella states that these partnerships have real value and serve to build platforms for other companies to build upon and develop solutions.
“At the end of the day, this new technological wave gives us the opportunity to dream bigger and set higher ambitions for what we can collectively achieve,” Nadella concluded, stressing that each one in the AI industry needs to play their part for this to finally come to fruition.
