Cloudflare is a company responsible for providing network services to websites and platforms on the internet. The company reported a service outage that caused many cryptocurrency websites' front ends to be inaccessible, and social media communications were also affected.
In an update on its system status on Tuesday, Cloudflare stated that it implemented a fix after reporting "internal service degradation" at 11:48 AM UTC.
"We believe the incident has now been resolved," Cloudflare stated in its status update. "We will continue to monitor for errors to ensure all services are back to normal."
The outage affected many users trying to access the front ends of websites, including X, Truth Social, Coinbase, Blockchain.com, Ledger, BitMEX, Toncoin, Arbiscan, and DefiLlama. Some websites, including Kraken, reported that they had "implemented a fix" before many others and appeared to have restored access.
Platforms like BlueSky and Reddit seemed unaffected by the outage.
A Cloudflare spokesperson stated in a comment to Cointelegraph:
"Today's Cloudflare outage shows how fragile the digital economy has become," said Fadl Mantash, Chief Information Security Officer of Tribe Payments, in a statement shared with Cointelegraph. "When a single upstream provider has issues, the impact is not contained; it cascades across various industries, affecting everything from social media platforms to e-commerce checkouts and backend payment services."
Despite many cryptocurrency and blockchain platforms promoting decentralization, they still seem to rely on centralized servers like Cloudflare. In October, an incident involving Amazon Web Services (AWS) caused Coinbase, Robinhood, and MetaMask to be inactive for several hours before recovering.
