Internet service provider Cloudflare stated that a failure in its bot detection system triggered an outage, causing approximately 20% of web pages to go down, including several cryptocurrency platforms.
Cloudflare said in a statement on Tuesday that its Bot Management System, designed to fend off cyberattacks, exceeded normal limits, leading to a malfunction in Cloudflare's software.
The company initially suspected that the incident was caused by a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack but confirmed that there was no cyberattack or malicious activity.
Cloudflare handles about 20% of internet traffic, supporting roughly one-third of the top 10,000 websites, applications, and services.
The outage caused websites of Coinbase, Blockchain.com, Ledger, BitMEX, Toncoin, Arbiscan, and DefiLlama to go down, as well as X and ChatGPT, prompting some cryptocurrency commentators to note the industry's reliance on centralized systems, some of which also went offline during a network failure at Amazon Web Services (AWS) last month.
A spokesperson for EthStorage told Cointelegraph that the products the company offers allow Ethereum to function as a web server, and the outages at AWS and Cloudflare demonstrate that "centralized infrastructure will always create single points of failure."
"There is a greater need than ever for a complete decentralized network stack," the company stated.
Last Wednesday, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin wrote a "Trustless Manifesto," urging industry builders never to sacrifice decentralization in the pursuit of adoption.
Buterin, along with Ethereum Foundation researchers Yoav Weiss and Marissa Posner, stated that cryptocurrency platforms sacrifice trustlessness the moment they integrate hosted nodes or centralized relays, explaining that while this may seem harmless, each new checkpoint becomes a potential bottleneck.
