Take a taxi to go swimming.

Taking a taxi to swim, I encountered a driver who once thrived but is now bankrupt and driving for Didi. This might be a reflection of many people's lives in recent years.

The driver is from 1986, and he left high school to venture into Shenzhen. He has run factories and engaged in foreign trade, struggling through various challenges, and his career was flourishing. At its peak, his annual revenue was nearly 200 million.

In 2020, the pandemic broke out, and the trade war began. A container of Bluetooth headphones he sent to the United States was detained by customs. The value of that container was about 9 million USD, but the U.S. customs held it for over two months for various reasons, leading to a breach of contract. Ultimately, he lost over 7 million USD (the U.S. side only compensated 2 million USD). This not only dealt a heavy blow to his business, but the four partners he started with also went bankrupt, and the American clients were not spared either; they went bankrupt as well.

At the same time, he opened a hotel in Zhengzhou, investing over 17 million RMB in the initial renovations. However, under the pandemic, the hotel business was dismal and could not sustain itself. After struggling for six months, he had no choice but to sell the hotel for over 8 million, and with various expenses, he ended up sharing a loss of several million.

Fortunately, this guy was very decisive. To repay his debts, he sold all his properties (escaping the impact of the plummeting housing prices), and barely managed to pay off most of his debts, leaving only a few hundred thousand.

After lying at home for six months with nothing to do, he started driving for Didi, and the other three friends also began driving for Didi. Although they knew they wouldn't earn much from it, it was better than doing nothing.

This should be the third Didi driver with a similar experience that I've encountered in Shenzhen ☹️, but they all managed to get through it and are currently looking for opportunities, only to find that opportunities are indeed very scarce.
