Quantum Event Horizon Ahead: Analyst Claims That Bitcoin Could Be Broken in 9 Years

Another voice has risen to warn about the looming threat of quantum computing to Bitcoin, and how the timeframe to prepare for it is closing in.

Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments, stated that the Bitcoin network is at risk of being compromised by quantum computers in the coming years, criticizing the “won’t happen” attitude that many Bitcoin advocates currently exhibit.

In social media, Edwards declared:

A quantum computer will break Bitcoin in just 2-9 years if we don’t upgrade. With high probability in the 4-5 years range. This is the timeframe all quantum experts converge on.

Edwards highlighted that we are already in what he called “Quantum Event Horizon,” meaning that “the frontier risk of a quantum hack is the same amount of time away as upgrade consensus and roll-out.”

Finally, he called to implement Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 360 (BIP 360) as a countermeasure to prepare for this outcome in 2026. BIP 360, authored by Hunter Beast, Ethan Heilman, and Isabel Foxen Duke, is an update that makes Bitcoin quantum-resistant by fixing the quantum-vulnerable address issue.

While the risks of quantum computing for the Bitcoin network have been raised by several experts and key opinion leaders in the crypto ecosystem, the upgrades that seek to prepare Bitcoin for it have not been implemented.

The construction of a quantum computer capable of taking advantage of the vulnerabilities of Bitcoin might spell doom for the network, as millions of tokens might change hands in an instant, changing the ownership dynamics of the network and upending the stability of the system and the value of bitcoin itself.

Preparing bitcoin for a quantum future is a matter of when, not if. Nonetheless, updates on Bitcoin have proven difficult from a social standpoint, and the sooner that this issue is debated, the quicker the problem will be addressed, at least partially.

  • What warning has Charles Edwards issued regarding quantum computing and Bitcoin?
Edwards cautioned that quantum computers could compromise Bitcoin within 2-9 years, urging the community to take the threat seriously.
  • What is the “Quantum Event Horizon” referred to by Edwards?
He describes this as a critical point where the risk of a quantum hack aligns closely with the timeline needed for consensus and upgrades to secure Bitcoin.
  • What specific proposal does Edwards advocate to counter quantum threats?
Edwards calls for the implementation of Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 360 (BIP 360) to make Bitcoin quantum-resistant by addressing vulnerable address issues.
  • Why is the urgency in preparing Bitcoin for quantum computing important?
Failure to prepare could lead to rapid and radical changes in ownership dynamics, potentially destabilizing the entire Bitcoin network and its value.
