Alchemy Unveils Autonomous Infrastructure Access for AI Agents via x402 Standard

Alchemy has launched a new “agentic” gateway that allows artificial intelligence (AI) agents to independently purchase compute credits and access blockchain data without any human intervention.

Announced on February 26, 2026, the update introduces a programmatic payment flow using x402, an open-source payment standard developed by Coinbase. This protocol revives the dormant “402 Payment Required” HTTP status code, enabling web services to request onchain payments directly from machine-to-machine interactions. When an AI agent hits a paywall or exhausts its balance, it receives an automated request to top up using USDC on the Base network, which it can fulfill autonomously using its own agentic wallet.

To support this new class of “first-class users,” Alchemy also introduced Alchemy Skills. These are structured, machine-readable reference documents designed specifically for LLMs. Unlike traditional developer documentation intended for humans, Alchemy Skills provide agents with targeted instructions on how to call specific APIs, manage context efficiently, and execute complex onchain workflows independently.

“This is the moment the agentic economy gets its own set of keys,” says Nikil Viswanathan, CEO of Alchemy.

🛠️ What AI Agents Can Access at Launch

The initial release focuses on the core tools required for autonomous on-chain operations:

  • Core RPC: Access to block-perfect data across 100+ supported networks.

  • NFT APIs: Programmatic queries for asset ownership and metadata.

  • Portfolio APIs: Real-time, multi-chain views of wallet balances and holdings.

  • Prices APIs: Instant access to spot and historical token pricing.

  • Micro-funding: Agents can start with as little as $1 in USDC to begin executing tasks.

🧭 FAQs

  • What is x402 and why is it used here? x402 is an internet-native payment protocol that allows servers to request crypto payments via HTTP headers, enabling agents to pay for data “per request” without manual invoicing.

  • Does an agent need a human to set up the account? No. Agents use their onchain wallets as both their identity and payment source, allowing for “no-contract” access to infrastructure.

  • What happens when an agent’s compute balance runs out? The Alchemy gateway issues an HTTP 402 response; the agent detects this, tops up its account automatically using USDC, and continues its task.

  • Which blockchains are supported for payments? At launch, payments are processed in USDC on Base, though Alchemy plans to add support for additional chains and assets shortly.
