In the past few days, the event that has stirred both the AI ecosystem and the crypto ecosystem the most is Meta's acquisition of Moltbook.
Moltbook, when it first launched in January, truly became very popular. It created a proprietary application for AI Agents, pioneering a new ecosystem. Subsequently, a slew of proprietary applications around AI Agents emerged inspired by it.
Therefore, it received high praise from many in the tech community, including the founder of OpenClaw, as soon as it launched.
This is the wave that Moltbook stirred in the AI ecosystem.
In the crypto ecosystem, its biggest "contribution" has been to spawn a large number of new crypto assets, giving many people another opportunity to revel around these crypto assets for a while.
But frankly, the significance of these crypto assets is very limited; the vast majority of the token economics are basically old tricks:
After the application makes money, it uses the profits to buy back and destroy tokens.
Aside from that, there seems to be no other more innovative mechanisms.
This application was popular for a while, but slowly cooled down, and now not much is being discussed. However, I still occasionally pay attention to Moltbook and the applications born around it to see if they have come up with new mechanisms---deep down, I still hold great hope that among them, one can grow into a sustainable ecosystem.
If we reluctantly consider Moltbook as an application that combines AI + Crypto, over the past few years we have seen quite a few similar applications that once shone brightly. But it is unfortunate that each of these applications has almost made a stunning entrance, only to exit quietly.
When they appeared, we could all see their innovative features and uniqueness, but after a wave of popularity, they all cooled down and could not maintain their momentum and continue to grow.
This regret always makes me curious: does AI + Crypto still lack a singularity? Where exactly is this singularity? In what field?
After Meta's acquisition of Moltbook, some people online mocked:
This is Zuckerberg urgently seeking medical help, starting to scatter cryptocurrency indiscriminately when he cannot find direction.
In response, Meta explained: it values the foundational framework for AI Agents that Moltbook has built.
This explanation sounds quite logical. It is somewhat like a natural extension of Facebook's genes and business thinking—Meta started with social networking, and Facebook is a network based on human social interactions. Now, with AI Agents, they naturally need a social network as well, and Moltbook just happens to be a core element to fill this gap.
From this acquisition, I am more willing to read out another trend:
Previously, our applications were developed around human needs; now, our applications will probably need to be developed around the needs of AI Agents.
In the future, applications specifically aimed at AI Agents may become a larger application trend.
However, what methods and scenarios are most suitable for applications aimed at AI Agents?
We will probably encounter many pitfalls in this method and scenario. Because we have always been accustomed to building applications using human thinking—we ourselves are users. But what applications AI Agents need requires thinking from the perspective of AI Agents, which we are probably not yet accustomed to with that new mindset.
Following the announcement of Meta's acquisition, Moltbook's token and the token of another project previously created by the project leader experienced a surge in a short period.
In my view, this surge is not very significant and does not warrant extensive discussion for the crypto ecosystem. I believe that a truly integrated AI + Crypto application should not only have short-term effects but should generate a model that can close loops, be sustainable, develop long-term, and create commercial value.
