Key Takeaways

  • A survey reveals two-thirds of Brazilians know about crypto, reflecting a 10% adoption rise since 2025.
  • Crypto is Brazil’s 5th most popular investment, as its 29 million users more than double stock buyers.
  • Dubbed the ‘people’s coin,’ crypto attracts low-income earners who mainly rely on bank apps for custody.

The second Brazilian National Crypto Survey offered insight into the state of cryptocurrency in Brazil, spearheaded by the popularity of stablecoins as dollar proxies for cross-border transactions and payments.

The survey, which was conducted by Paradigma, a Brazilian research firm, and Datafolha, one of Brazil’s largest market research institutions, and sponsored by Coinbase and Hashdex, polled 2,004 users from May 11 to May 14 in 137 municipalities at fixed poll stations, with a 95% confidence level and an error margin of 2%.

The poll found that two-thirds of Brazilians already know about cryptocurrency, with bitcoin and ethereum being the most recognized digital assets, and Drex, the national central bank digital currency (CBDC) project, reaching third.

This represents a 10% rise from 2025 levels, indicating the growth that the crypto industry has experienced during that period.

In addition, while cryptocurrencies are not in the top 3 most popular investment options, they rank fifth with 17.2%, trailing savings, real estate, money at home, and investment funds. Nonetheless, digital assets surpass fixed-income bank certificates (15.1%), foreign currency (14%), gold (9.8%), and even stocks (6.4%).

This means that Brazilians who have invested in crypto outnumber those who have bought stocks by more than double, estimated at around 29 million investors. Even so, Brazilians who have put their money in savings outnumber crypto investors by over three times.

Unlike other investment options, crypto is not an elite phenomenon. Over 77% of surveyed crypto investors earn less than three minimum wages. Over a third of these investors earn less than a minimum wage, making crypto a popular investment choice for low-income Brazilians, labeled as “moeda do povo” (the people’s coin) in the poll’s report.

Finally, crypto investment is concentrated in banks: 83% of the crypto investors surveyed use bank apps and infrastructure to acquire and hold digital assets, while only 26% utilize self-custody wallets. Finally, just 20% have held crypto in an exchange.
