Bitcoin has been fluctuating around seventy-six thousand to seventy-eight thousand these days. Some are waiting for a plunge to buy at the bottom, while others are waiting for a rebound to increase their positions. The weekend is the best time to figure one thing out: what exactly are you buying, and what are those in the market who are not betting on ups and downs doing when the direction is unclear.

Is Bitcoin a currency intermediary or an investment product? Should we first clarify its attributes?

Satoshi Nakamoto's 2008 white paper described it as a "peer-to-peer electronic cash system." The design goal is more akin to a payment and settlement tool: transferring value from A to B without relying on bank records.

In reality, most people do not use it to buy groceries, pay salaries, or price goods. More people treat it as a high-volatility asset: it can rise and fall, hedge against the narrative of fiat money overproduction, and be moved between global accounts. Federal Reserve Chairman Powell mentioned a similar idea years ago: cryptocurrencies are more like speculative assets, their essence is closer to gold than to being a substitute for the dollar.

These two layers do not have to negate each other. Gold is simultaneously an industrial metal, jewelry material, and monetary metal. Bitcoin is also simultaneously:

  • Network: A globally verifiable settlement system
  • Commodity: A digital commodity with a supply cap written into the protocol
  • Asset: Market priced, with institutions expressing positions through ETFs, futures, and reserves

What truly needs distinguishing is not "it must only be one of these," but rather which layer you are using. If you use it as money, you care about stability, acceptability, transaction fees, and settlement time; if you use it as an investment product, you care about position size, volatility, liquidity, and hedging tools. Mixing them up makes it easiest to call it "future currency" during a surge and then curse it as "worthless" during a downfall.

Some question: if it is really money, how could it be subject to such speculation? If no one is there to buy, does it immediately go to zero? Its finite quantity—how would it serve as money in the future? At least gold has a physical form.

These questions are often tied together, but they really need to be unpacked.

1. High price alone does not prove it "is already money."

One of the most fundamental functions of money is as a unit of account: people are willing to use it to price other goods, and those prices do not change multiple times a day. Bitcoin still struggles to reliably perform this function. High prices and volatility actually show that the market primarily prices it based on "scarce asset + narrative + liquidity," rather than as a "unit of daily accounting." Driving up its price and it becoming money are not the same thing.

2. "If no one buys, it goes to zero" refers to the speculative chain, not the network itself.

In the short term, this statement holds some truth: if the buyers are just waiting for the next higher-priced buyer, then it’s a game of folly. However, Bitcoin is different from a worthless asset with no use case—it has a continuously operating settlement network, verifiable ownership, and rules that prevent any issuer from arbitrarily increasing supply. Going to zero is not mathematically impossible, but the premise typically requires the network to be completely abandoned, or for a stronger alternative or systemic regulatory and infrastructure breakdown to emerge. This is not a judgment of the same magnitude as "if no one leverages to buy today, it goes to zero tomorrow."

3. Gold has a physical form; Bitcoin does not. This is a fact, but the comparison must be complete.

The advantages of gold are very solid: thousands of years of consensus, industrial and jewelry demand, central bank reserve habits, and independence from electricity and networks. Bitcoin lacks these. It offers a different set of attributes: divisible, portable, remotely verifiable, transferable 24/7, with publicly available rules that are hard to unilaterally modify. Saying "it has no physical form, so it has no value" is akin to only acknowledging industrial use while ignoring that money and network consensus can also be sources of value. Neither side is unconditionally valid.

4. "There are only 21 million in total, which isn't enough for currency"—this confuses maximum units with minimum units.

The total cap of Bitcoin is a design, not a flaw. For "store of value," the cap is to combat dilution; for "payment," what matters is not how many whole coins there are, but whether there can be enough fractional units. One Bitcoin can be divided into 100 million satoshis. If the world were to use it for pricing, goods would be priced in satoshis or milli-satoshis rather than forever imaging "1 BTC = a car." Layer-two solutions like the Lightning Network shift small payments off-chain when the main chain's capacity isn't enough. The maximum quantity limits dilution, but not the number of transactions. What truly hinders it from becoming everyday money is more related to volatility, regulation, tax implications, and merchant acceptance, not "the number isn’t enough."
So:

If it aims to be money, it currently fails; if it aims to be a transferable scarce digital asset, the market is already pricing it.

Attributes can coexist, but functions cannot pretend to be completed. Clearly understanding this over the weekend will help you approach arbitrage, futures, and "smart money" without treating the tools as beliefs.

If you really want to participate: in ultra-short trading, timing is often more important than price.

Directional trades require guessing price movements. The greater the volatility, the harder it is to guess correctly. In early September 2026, Bitcoin fell from around eighty-two thousand to about seventy-seven thousand; with ETF funds coming and going, and macro data looming, during such times, "I’m bullish at seventy-five thousand" and "I’m bullish at eighty-five thousand" can find justifications, but both could be breached by an hour of liquidity.

In ultra-short and neutral strategies, what is often more valuable is not the price point, but rather the few minutes to hours when price differences occur:

  • Before and after new futures and contracts launch, when pricing hasn’t yet been arbitrageur smoothed
  • When a specific exchange suddenly has reduced depth, creating brief premiums or discounts on the same BTC
  • When funding rates are extremely positive or negative, creating lockable basis between spot and futures or between futures contracts
  • During weekends or before data releases, when cross-exchange quotes temporarily detach

 The phrase "before futures launch" does not rest on being superstitious of any single listing. Rather: as more derivatives emerge, pricing will diverge; the divergence will have the largest price difference when it first appears, and as institutions, market makers, and programs come into play, the annualized yield will be compressed to levels just enough to cover funding costs. The Bitcoin basis trading that Wall Street has been performing over the past two years is a vivid example—price differences went from very wide to only a few points, rapidly losing attractiveness.

The following three tactics are often referred to as "low-risk" in the market. Note: low risk does not mean zero risk.

Tactic One: Cross-Platform Arbitrage

For the same BTC, the spot or perpetual price on exchange A is 100, while on exchange B it is 100.4. Theoretically, buy on the cheaper side and sell on the more expensive side while waiting for the prices to converge, or directly transfer the coin to sell it.

It sounds like easy money, but in reality, it hinges on four factors:

  • Transfer time and on-chain congestion
  • The fees on both sides, withdrawal fees, and slippage
  • Whether there’s enough depth to absorb your order
  • The exchange’s own payout and risk control

Among mainstream exchanges, in calm markets, the price difference is often just a few basis points; volatility, new listings, or liquidity withdrawals from certain exchanges can suddenly widen the price difference. Thus, this business is a contest of monitoring speed and execution, not just "I feel Bitcoin is cheap."

Suitable for: Those who have accounts spread across two or more exchanges, can compute fees, and whose single trade size won’t cause a withdrawal block. Not suitable for: Novices who only have one account and need to wait for manual confirmation to transfer chasing a "0.3% flash price."

Tactic Two: Shorting Futures (or more accurately, hedging against spot rather than naked shorts)

When futures or perpetual contracts are clearly more expensive than spots, a common practice is to: buy the spot and short equally in futures/perpetuals. If the price goes up, the spot earns and the short loses; if the price goes down, the short gains and the spot loses. After the direction is hedged away, what’s left is:

  • The premium (basis) locked in when opening the position
  • In the case of perpetuals, there may also be regular positive funding fees charged

This is what is commonly referred to as cash-and-carry. Conversely, when futures are significantly discounted and the funding rate is negative, it’s time for the reverse structure of "borrowing coins to sell spot + going long on contracts," which has a higher threshold and faces borrowing costs and difficulties in obtaining coins.

The phrase "shorting futures" is often mistakenly understood as: I’m bearish on Bitcoin, so I open a short. That’s directional trading and not the same as arbitrage. The short in arbitrage is meant to offset risks associated with price movements.

Where the risks lie: if leverage is set too high, one side explodes first; funding rates suddenly reverse; and delivery rules, margins, and forced liquidation prices become asymmetric on both sides. Low leverage and matching positions must be considered in terms of "relatively low risk."

Tactic Three: Locking Price Differences

The first two tactics both fear one thing: when you see a price difference of 0.6%, by the time both legs are executed, the price difference might only be 0.2%, or even result in one leg being executed while the other is not.

Locking the price difference aims to make "buying and selling" complete as a basket simultaneously, writing down the entry price difference. Professional exchanges now offer price difference orders, combo orders, and arbitrage orders; on the tool front, programs can execute both legs at once while setting entry price difference ratios and exit price difference ratios. Entering a trade captures favorable price differences and exits when the price spread converges or the fee cycle completes.

This step transforms "I thought it was locked" into "the system orders based on the price difference ratios I set." For newcomers, this is far more important than clicking back and forth at two windows.

Who is suited for these three tactics, and who is not?

More suitable for:

  • Those who can accept that annualized returns may not look so exhilarating, but the drawdowns are relatively manageable
  • Funds that aren’t living expenses and can be locked up for a period to absorb fees or await basis returns
  • Those willing to first understand fees, funding rates, leverage, margins, rather than just looking at the four characters "annualized 40%"
  • Those needing tools to monitor without having to manually back and forth during work hours

Less suitable for:

  • Those who want to double their money in a week using 10x leverage (that’s not arbitrage, it’s speculation with a disguise)
  • Those with only a small exchange account and who have to wait a long time for manual withdrawal approvals
  • Those who interpret "low risk" as "will not incur losses"

Once again highlighting the risks, to prevent the "almost zero risk" in the title from being mistaken for a promise: exchange risks, API permission risks, slippage, fee reversals, loaned coins being recalled, program anomalies, and discrepancies in margin in extreme market conditions all genuinely exist. Historically, "guaranteed profitable basis" can also be thinned out by institutions. There are no zero-risk financial structures, only whether the risk has been factored into your quotes.
