0x has taken a rather provocative title: “Uniswap v4 hooks were a mistake.”

They said that this year, approximately 81.92 million transactions worth $42.67 billion have been routed through 0x, with about 70% involving Uniswap liquidity.

In the process, they found that malicious v4 Hooks are increasing rapidly.

0x analyzed 84,163 Hooks across 6 chains, with 54.2% determined to be malicious and 26.4% considered potentially malicious;

some malicious Hooks appeared very cheap when queried by aggregators, making them look like the optimal path in the entire market, but ultimately the actual amount received by users could be even 50% less than the quoted price.

This is really frustrating!

The biggest innovation of Uniswap v4 is, after all, Hooks.

However, the proportion of Hooks and the proportion of transaction volume are completely different matters. One person can deploy 10,000 junk Hooks in a day, which can significantly raise the malicious rate, but they may only have a liquidity of a few hundred dollars.

What classification standards does 0x use, what is the false positive rate, and how are duplicate Hooks calculated? I have not yet seen sufficiently complete disclosures of these methodological details in the publicly available materials.

What I want to see more is:

What percentage of malicious Hooks accounts for v4 TVL? What percentage of actual transaction volume? How many real users were routed in? What are the actual losses?

Additionally, is it possible that the problems encountered by v4 could instead foster a new security industry?
