Zcash has reduced block time to 25 seconds, and privacy payments have begun entering the productization stage.

The next step that Zcash needs to address may not be "Is the privacy strong enough," but rather "Can privacy payments actually be used?"

On September 17, the Zcash development team announced the NU7 upgrade schedule: Testnet will launch on October 6, with the goal of activating the mainnet on November 5.

The most anticipated change in this upgrade is reducing the block target interval from the current 75 seconds to 25 seconds. According to the developers' design, the time users wait for the first block confirmation will be significantly shortened, improving the actual use experience of privacy payments.

However, what is truly worth paying attention to in NU7 goes beyond just "a speed increase of three times."

It is the emergence of a change in the Zcash ecosystem that has rarely been discussed in the past:

The privacy technology is shifting from "hiding transactions" to "carrying specific assets and applications."

First, let's look at the summary

  • NU7 aims to launch the mainnet on November 5, with the testnet starting on October 6;
  • The block interval is shortened from 75 seconds to 25 seconds;
  • This upgrade will also introduce a Network Sustainability Mechanism and adjust the distribution between transaction fees and future miner rewards;
  • The Zcash ecosystem has recently seen experiments like the Zcash Club based on the ZSA testnet for NFTs;
  • Privacy assets are attempting to expand from single payment scenarios to identity, collectibles, and application assets.

25-second blocks change more than just speed

Zcash's privacy payments previously had an inherent contradiction:

The stronger the privacy protection, the more complex the transaction confirmation experience that users have to accept.

For ordinary transfers, this may not be a fatal issue.

But if privacy payments are to enter real consumption, cross-border payments, or in-app settlement scenarios, the waiting time will directly affect the user experience.

NU7 compresses the block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, essentially lowering this threshold.

It should be noted that this does not mean that Zcash's throughput simply becomes three times greater, nor does it mean that all payment scenarios will experience a threefold speed increase.

More accurately:

Fixed scenarios that wait for block confirmation can significantly shorten confirmation wait times.

Developers see this as a step towards bringing private payments closer to actual payment scenarios.

More interestingly, NFTs are starting to emerge

If we only look at prices, the recent story of Zcash is that privacy coins are once again receiving market attention.

However, on the ecological level, something even more interesting is happening.

The Zcash Club has begun testing ZSA NFTs.

Their design does not place NFT trading entirely on another chain but employs:

ZEC mainnet for payments, ZSA testnet for NFT delivery.

The Zcash Club plans to launch 3,333 identity-type NFTs and package them as "identity" and "membership." Users connect through a shielded mainnet wallet, payments are completed on the mainnet, and then NFTs are delivered via the ZSA testnet.

This is actually a very small experiment, but its significance lies in:

For the first time, a privacy chain attempts to make "privacy" itself part of the asset usage scenario.

In the past, NFTs addressed "who owns this asset."

Now, privacy NFTs attempt to solve:

"I own this asset, but others do not necessarily need to know who I am."

This may be the truly noteworthy aspect of the next phase of the Zcash ecosystem

NU7 addresses infrastructure efficiency.

ZSA addresses asset issuance and applications.

Experiments like Zcash Club are trying to link the two together.

If in the future identity, membership, collectibles, and even certain commercial rights can be interacted with through privacy assets, then Zcash's positioning will no longer just be:

"A privacy transfer chain."

It may become:

"A suite of on-chain application infrastructure supporting privacy assets."

Of course, we are still far from this stage.

The Zcash Club is still in the testing phase, and the November 5 date for NU7 is also the target for the mainnet launch, with the final activation decision expected to be made on October 20 based on the testnet situation.

Therefore, what is truly worth observing next is not how much ZEC can rise.

But rather three more practical data points:

Whether the actual transaction confirmation time improves after NU7 goes live; whether more asset experiments appear on ZSA; and whether privacy assets can generate sustained real usage demand.

If these begin to appear, the narrative of privacy surrounding Zcash may truly transform from "market concept" to "product capability."
