The giant whale has turned bearish for the first time since March, and BTC faces a major test with the Federal Reserve's decision.

Approximately $1.33 billion in shorts has overwhelmed longs, large whales are betting on a decline in Bitcoin. However, if the market reverses and rises, the crowded short positions may also become the trigger for a new round of volatility.

On October 27, the large trader group on the on-chain derivatives platform Hyperliquid turned to a net short position in BTC, marking the first occurrence of this since March of this year. Meanwhile, the market is awaiting the latest interest rate decision and speech from the Federal Reserve chairman, prompting investors to reassess the year-end interest rate path.

Changes in macro policy and derivatives positions mean that the upcoming market trends will not only depend on the interest rate decision but also on how leveraged funds adjust their direction. Whales shift to net shorts, positions show significant divergence

According to the latest tracking data of whale positions, as of October 27, large accounts on Hyperliquid held approximately $1.33 billion in BTC short positions, while long positions amounted to about $952 million, with shorts exceeding longs by about $377 million.

This indicates that among the large accounts tracked on the platform, bearish exposure has surpassed bullish exposure.

Some whale positions are particularly notable. Reports show that there is an account that established a short position exceeding $200 million in BTC, with an approximate entry price of $76,000. When BTC returns to around $80,000, this type of short position will face certain unrealized losses.

However, a net short position from whales does not necessarily mean that the market will decline. Derivative positions only reflect the holdings of specific platforms and account groups; some shorts may also be used to hedge long exposures in other markets, and should not be directly interpreted as all large traders being bearish on BTC.

Near $85,000, shorts also face reverse liquidation risks

Another noteworthy aspect of the current position structure is that if BTC continues to rise, short positions may be forced to liquidate.

Related estimates show that when BTC approaches $85,000, about $3.3 billion in short positions may face liquidation risks. For leveraged traders, when prices move in an unfavorable direction and margin is insufficient, the platform may forcibly close their positions; when shorts are liquidated, they need to buy BTC, which could further drive prices up.

This creates an interesting situation: on one hand, whales overall have turned net short, reflecting that some large traders are more cautious about short-term trends; on the other hand, if prices unexpectedly strengthen, concentrated shorts may amplify a rebound.

However, the estimated liquidation amounts are based on specific price conditions and do not mean that BTC will necessarily see an equal scale of liquidation when it reaches $85,000. The actual outcome still depends on position changes, margin levels, and market liquidity.

Therefore, it is necessary to observe price direction, open interest, and funding rates simultaneously in the future, rather than solely judging market conditions based on the whale long-short ratio.

With the Federal Reserve's decision approaching, the market awaits year-end interest rate signals

Apart from position changes, macro policy remains an important variable for the market this week.

The Federal Reserve will hold an interest rate meeting from October 27 to 28. Before the meeting, the market generally expects rates to remain in the 3.75% to 4.00% range, but investors are more concerned with how the policy statement and chairman's speech will interpret inflation pressures and whether there is still a possibility of further rate hikes in the future.

Recent inflation pressures, energy prices, and economic activity performance make it challenging for the market to entirely rule out the possibility of another rate hike by year-end. Even if this meeting maintains rates, if the policy statement is tougher than expected, the market may still reprice the rate path for December.

For BTC, changes in interest rate expectations mainly affect asset pricing through dollar liquidity, bond yields, and risk appetite. If the market believes high rates will persist longer, risk assets may face pressure; if the policy statement is less hawkish than expected, it may alleviate some short-term pressures.

However, positive macro factors do not necessarily mean BTC will rise, especially when derivative positions are already highly concentrated; the market may first experience significant bidirectional volatility before forming a relatively clear direction.

After the decision, focus on three sets of signals

First, observe whether BTC can hold the key price range and whether there is significant short covering and liquidation as it approaches $85,000.

Second, track the size of net shorts among whales, funding rates, and open interest. If short positions decrease rapidly while prices rise, it may indicate that short covering is driving the market; if prices weaken while shorts continue to increase, caution is needed regarding further accumulation of downward pressure.

Third, pay attention to the Federal Reserve's statements regarding December policy, as well as the synchronous reactions of the U.S. stock market, dollar, and Treasury yields. If risk assets weaken overall, BTC may also be weighed down by the macro environment; if market concerns about future rates alleviate, it will be important to see if spot buying can follow suit.

The shift of whales to short positions is a signals to watch, but it is not the ultimate answer for market direction. The Federal Reserve's decision may serve as a short-term catalyst, but what truly determines whether volatility continues are the interactions between macro expectations, spot funds, and leveraged positions.
