L2 war essentially is legitimacy war, the war to win the Mandate of Heaven from Ethereum. Bitcoin first received the Mandate of Heaven in response to the mass bailout of 2008 financial crisis. Ethereum received the second Mandate of Heaven in response to a tightly controlled cyber and financial space. But Ethereum mainnet can’t scale without sacrificing decentralization. A total laze-fair scaling roadmap presented opportunities for projects to inherit such mandate from Ethereum. All attempts have failed since none of them are actually as decentralized public infrastructure as the Ethereum mainnet. It’s all private good (maybe except the op/taiko stack) owned heavily by a bunch of insiders profiteering their own pockets. They become the new establishment they once wanna overthrown.
