My visit to Saba was short but productive. It was extraordinary to see how an island of 2,000 inhabitants is working so hard on self-sufficiency, livelihood security and future-proofing. I spoke about this with Island Governor Jonathan Johnson – the longest-serving administrator in the Caribbean part of the Netherlands. We toured the island and visited a number of projects that are important to Saba’s future.   📚 We visited the Enrichment Center in St. Johns, Saba’s comprehensive school. An expansion is currently being constructed, including a sports hall, a theater space, and in the future an expansion of the school itself.   ⛴️ A hurricane-resistant port is being developed at Black Rocks Harbor. The only port Saba currently has, Fort Bay Harbor, was damaged by hurricane Irma in 2017, which was devastating to the island’s supply lines. So a resilient alternative is urgently needed.
