Coinbase reveals December 2024 data theft incident affecting 69461 users

According to The Block, Coinbase has submitted documents to the Maine Attorney General's Office confirming that the December 2024 data breach affected 69461 users. Hackers obtained system access by bribing overseas customer service personnel, stealing KYC information including name, address, and email, but did not involve passwords, private keys, or user funds. The documents show that hackers once demanded a ransom of $20 million and threatened to disclose data publicly. Coinbase previously stated that less than 1% of the total number of affected users were affected, and it is expected that the aftermath costs will reach $180-400 million.
