The WSJ published a fascinating article yesterday on potential economic espionage. An official from the Federal Reserve is accused of supplying sensitive and confidential information to Chinese intelligence agencies, but the official claims he was merely teaching Chinese students and had no idea they were intelligence agents. I have no idea what is factually true, nor do I have an opinion on whether the official is guilty, but the story highlights how important economic data and economic policy decisions have become in the global competition between the US and China. I recommend reading the article to better understand how previously mundane aspects of the US economy are now dictating the geopolitical stage.
