Trump's policies have led to a sharp increase in US customs tariff revenue, but government spending has increased instead of decreased

According to BlockBeats, on June 12th, according to the monthly budget statement of the US Treasury Department, the US Customs tariff revenue in May reached $23 billion, an increase of $17 billion or 270% compared to the same period last year. The May data is more than three times the average monthly level of 2024. The surge in tariff revenue reflects the impact of several new tariffs imposed by Trump, most of which came into effect in early April. Not only tariffs, the total government tax revenue in May increased by 15% from last year's $323.6 billion to $371.2 billion. However, compared to all the expenditures of the US government, the record breaking tariff revenue is just a drop in the ocean. In May, government spending reached $687.2 billion (a 2.5% increase from the same period last year), so tariff revenue only accounts for 3% of US government spending. Officials from the Ministry of Finance stated that the improvement in the fiscal situation last month was also due to the decrease in debt interest costs, which was attributed to the reduction in interest payments on inflation linked securities and the decrease in the discount rate of short-term treasury bills. Nevertheless, the overall situation remains discouraging, with interest payments reaching $92.2 billion in May, reflecting the unsustainable debt situation in the United States. The US government accumulates a total interest expenditure of $1.2 trillion annually, which is only $300 billion less than the largest expenditure category - social security expenditure. (Golden Ten)
