I think it's important to say that I know, and I hope everyone also knows, that how we're required to think and behave in markets are wholly untethered from our real personal lives and what satisfies our souls. I am a happy person. My life is amazing. I have an incredible partner and a beautiful son. Being a father is the only job that matters. I am generally optimistic about human survivability and ingenuity. We've proven to be a resilient species. No matter what I think at a given moment about a chart or the economy, that is merely a fraction of my day, and how I spend time with my family is what takes precedent. It's vitally important to divide markets from those purer, untarnished aspects of life. Markets and trading are brutal games designed to separate the weak from the ruthless, the bold from the fearful. You must be cynical and game plan for worst case scenarios because naivety and blind optimism get taken advantage of. Every decision is a competition against others and your livelihood can be taken in a flash. You must be savage and unflinching in your extraction of profit, and this presents a constant tension. Many of us spend majority of our time on Twitter debating markets and macro where cold Darwinian behavior rules. We compete against each other financially, spar on ideas, posture publicly, and it can become easy to forget that folks have real lives and families behind the screen- that people are generally good and decent and of moral character even if they're across the spread from you on a bet. Behind the barbed tongues are regular people who put their pants on one leg at a time, have families to shelter and feed, and who live lives very much like your own when they're not on social media. Idk why I felt the need to put this into words. I was just thinking about how weird this place can be and how we sometimes treat each other like cartoon characters who only exist in a portfolio position, rather than equal beings whirling through the galaxy on a big rock together.
